Ministry warning on illegal exorcists ![]()
QNA/Doha
The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has called on all who need treatment by incantation (ruqyah) to deal only with the licensed and authorised persons, listed at the ministry website :www.islam.gov.qa
It warned that any person who practises without the ministry’s authorisation should be considered as illegal practitioner.
Exorcists’ co-ordinator at the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Abdullah Me’jib al-Dossari said during a press conference yesterday, that the ministry was keen to organise the work of exorcists. He said the ministry had selected a number of well known and qualified healers by a committee set up in 2005. He added that at present they are 11 qualified healers.
He noted that any practitioner of ruqyah treatment in Qatar should pass the test conducted by the committee and obtain a permit. In this context, he explained that the aim of organising the exorcist’s profession is to preserve faith and protect people from charlatans and sorcerers, and non-qualified exorcists who exploit patients by asking for huge amounts of money.
He explained that exorcists licensed by the ministry undergo training in this area in addition to attending courses in the field of psychiatry.
Al-Dossari said the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs and the Ministry of Interior co-operate to control any illegal practitioners.
Ruqyah in Islam is the recitation from the Holy Qur’an, seeking of refuge, remembrance and supplications that are used as a means of treating sicknesses and other problems.
