Basedon the narrative poem The Ballad of Mulan and a remake of the 1998 animated film, the movie follows Mulan as she takes her frail father's place in the emperor's army, presenting herself as a man. During the 90-second trailer, viewers discover that a matchmaker has found a partner for Mulan, which her father says is the best thing for her family. She promises "to bring honor to us all," and the trailer picks up steam, showing sweeping landscape shots and training sessions, with Mulan expertly using a bow and arrow and running across rooftops.

"Ancestors, please protect her..." Disney has debuted another new TV trailer, only 60 seconds long, for their live-action Mulan movie opening at the end of March in theaters everywhere. This latest preview plays like a cut down version of the most recent full-length trailer, with just a few extra shots throw in. This live-action update of Mulan is directed by Niki Caro (Whale Rider, McFarland USA, and The Zookeeper's Wife) and stars Liu Yifei as the legendary Hua Mulan. It's adapted directly from the original 1998 animated movie, about a young Chinese maiden who disguises herself as a male warrior in order to fight and save her father. Set in China during the Han dynasty, she takes her father's place to fight off an incoming Hun invasion. The cast includes Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Yoson An, Gong Li, Jason Scott Lee, Tzi Ma, Ron Yuan, Jimmy Wong, Rosalind Chao, and Utkarsh Ambudkar. This continues to look better than everyone expected.

The new trailer, which follows July's teaser, takes a serious approach to the Disney animated original. Fans will notice there is no "good luck" cricket or talking Mushu dragon in this live-action remake, at least as far as this trailer shows.

Slated for release March 27, and directed by Niki Caro, the live-action adaptation follows Hua Mulan, the fearless young daughter of aged warrior Fa Zhou. Mulan impersonates a man to take her father's place during a Hun invasion and becomes one of China's greatest heroines.

The first trailer for Disney's live-action reboot of its 1998 film Mulan was released on Sunday online and on FOX, during the live broadcast of the FIFA Women's World Cup final between the United States and the Netherlands.

Walt Disney Studios releases the Mulan teaser trailer, offering fans a first look at the upcoming live-action reimagining. Released in 1998 at the tail end of the Disney Renaissance, Mulan was adapted from the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan. However, with the empowering tale of Mulan (Ming-Na Wen) becoming a warrior in the Chinese army, a hilarious performance from Eddie Murphy as the dragon guardian Mushu, and catchy soundtrack songs like "I'll Make A Man Out of You," the movie became a beloved piece of Disney's animated library. Like many other animated Disney movies, it also takes a great deal of liberties with the source material, making for a much lighter, family friendly movie.

Still, the love that many fans still have for Mulan made it an obvious choice for Disney's trend of reimagining its animated classics as live-action films. Set for release in March 2020, Disney's live-action Mulan is directed by Niki Caro and starring Chinese-American actress Liu Yifei. A first look photo of Yifei as Mulan was released when filming started last year, but Disney had yet to release any footage to the fans - until now.

In addition to Liu, the movie stars Donnie Yen as Mulan's mentor Commander Tung, Yoson An as Mulan's ally and love interest Chen Honghui, Jason Scott Lee as Hun warrior Bori Khan, Gong Li as the villainous witch Xian Lang, Tzi Ma as Mulan's father Hua Zhou and Jet Li as the Emperor. Further, Jimmy Wong, Doua Moua and Chen Tang star as fellow soldiers in Mulan's unit, Ling, Po and Yao, respectively. As evidenced by the cast list, the characters set to appear in Disney's live-action Mulan are a mix of those from the original animated movie - as is the case with Ling, Po and Yao - while others are completely new, with Chen Honghui replacing Li Shang as Mulan's love interest.

The Mulan trailer further proves the many differences Caro's film will have to Disney's original animated movie. Unlike recent reimaginings like Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book, the creative team behind Mulan has chosen to differentiate itself a great deal from the animated film. Whether that pays off remains to be seen. Without the iconic soundtrack, the fan-favorite characters of Mushu and Li Shang and a number of changes to the story, it's unclear if Mulan will be able to appeal both to those who grew up watching the 1998 animated musical as well as new viewers.

That said, the majority of Disney's live-action remakes have done well with critics and viewers, as well as at the box office. So it's likely the Mouse House knows exactly what they're doing with this latest reimagining. Fans will just have to wait and see Mulan for themselves when the movie hits theaters next spring.

Last weekend, Disney unveiled the first trailer for its much-anticipated live-action Mulan, which is set for a release later next year. In the 89-second clip, Chinese actress Liu Yifei 刘亦菲, who stars as the legendary heroine, can be seen jumping from roof to roof, wielding swords, pulling off Wuxia-style stunts, and basically going full warrior.

While the new trailer made it clear that Mulan, instead of a white man, stands at the center of the movie, the short clip still raises some questions about whether the production team has paid enough respect to the legend, and whether the historical and cultural discrepancies in the trailer are the result of artistic license or indifference.
