A few EOC Questions...

Easy questions first...

1. I've asked our SpEd people and no one has an answer - if a SpEd
Freshman takes Alg 1A and 1B, then fails; can they still use the
portfolio option for credit? Our folks knew the portfolio was an
option for SpEd in a regular Alg 1 class, but not sure about the A/B
option.

2. Our administration has heard rumors that the cutoff score will be
20, anyone else heard or confirmed that?

3. With the portfolio option and the creation of Alg 1 A/B for SpEd
students, it's pretty clear that the State acknowledges that the rigor
of the new tests will be a challenge and have implemented safety nets
for this segment of our population. I currently teach a class of 20+
SpEd students in Algebra 1, all of which are non-Freshman and need to
pass the EOC/GW to graduate. With all of the safety nets created for
Freshman SpEd (who don't have to pass the test), are there none for
students that need to pass in order to graduate? I realize we were
told that the State Target rate might be reduced this year, I believe
to 75%, but I'm more worried about the kids that can't pass and
graduate than anything.

Mike, it is my understanding that students still under the old regime ( 10th graders and above ) will have an opportunity to take a Gateway style test if they fail to reach the competency level set for the EOC. This will not help them to obtain a passing mark in Algebra I, but will satisfy the Gateway qualification for graduation. Also the score needed to pass the EOC and the one needed on the EOC to satisfy the Gateway are to be two different numbers. I hope this helps some. Dan O.
