Roane State Community College is launching a Fire Science emphasis to expand local emergency response training in East Tennessee with state support, aligning with the Tennessee Board of Regents guidance.
Starting on 20th June 2026, the program blends classroom learning with field experience, enabling students to earn state credentials locally. The curriculum includes more than two dozen courses and leads to an Associate of Applied Science in General Technology with a Fire Science focus. Roane State seeks full program approval from its accrediting body and the Tennessee Board of Regents.
The Tennessee Firefighting Commission has already authorized Roane State to deliver courses preparing students for certifications such as Hazardous Materials Awareness and Firefighter I and II, allowing testing to be completed locally and helping departments meet training statutes.
Through partnerships with Alcoa, Oak Ridge and Rockwood fire departments, students will participate in hands-on training and ride-alongs with veterans. Dr. Diane Ward, Vice President for Student Learning, says the program is designed to improve job placement and support recruitment and retention for the region’s fire services. The college is also exploring dual-enrollment for high school students, with schedules and enrollment processes to be announced before fall registration.
Respectfully,
