TFIRS Tip
Equipment Unattended vs. Unattended Person
In the NFIRS Fire Module, there are two categories of factors that contribute to ignition. One is physical and one is personal. The physical factor is Fire Module E2 – Factors Contributing to Ignition. The word physical is missing
from the name but is implied. Factor Contributing to Ignition is the factor that allowed the heat source and combustible material to combine to ignite the fire. Factor Contributing to Ignition 53 - Equipment unattended refers no one being present when the
equipment provided the heat to start the fire.
The personal factor contributing to ignition is Fire Module E3 – Human Factors Contributing to Ignition. This is the human condition or situation that allowed the heat source and combustible material to combine to ignite the fire.
Human Factor 3 – Unattended person, means the person was unattended, not the equipment involved in ignition. Code 3 includes “latch key” situations whether the person involved is young or old and situations where the person involved lacked supervision or
care.
For some fires, both physical and human factors could contribute to ignition. If unattended equipment is involved in ignition, Factor Contributing to Ignition should be 53 – Equipment unattended. Human Factor would usually be N-None
unless the person who was absent was very young, very old or otherwise impaired.
