The first offering of the Fire Chief Orientation class for 2021 will be at the Fire Academy at 2161 Unionville-Deason Road in Bell Buckle.  This class will be offered on the weekend only, on Saturday, March 13, and Sunday, March 14.

There are currently 43 seats available.  We have room, so make the most of this free training.

COVID-19 precautions will be in effect.  Students must be COVID tested two weeks prior to attending and must bring the test results with them.  Masks will be worn, and social distancing will be practiced.  Contact TFACA if you have any questions about the academy’s COVID-19 precautions.

The 16-hour fire chief orientation class is required to meet the Assistant to the Commissioner training law passed in 2006 (T.C.A. § 68-102-108).  All fire chiefs from recognized Tennessee fire departments hired, elected, or appointed after July 1, 2006 must complete 16 hours of training within one year of becoming the chief (T.C.A. § 68-102-108(c)).  The 16-hour course includes a variety of subjects including fire incident reporting, fire cause determination, legal requirements for fire chiefs, basic management skills, fire service agencies and associations, and fire service requirements in the state of Tennessee.

  • The course is open to all fire officers.  There is currently plenty of space to accommodate all officers.
  • New fire chiefs who need the class to comply with state law have admission priority.
  • Course content is updated every year, and fire chiefs and other officers find it beneficial to take the course again if it has been a few years since they took the course.
  • This class qualifies for officer training under Section 580C2 of the ISO Fire Suppression Rating Schedule, which requires a minimum of 12 hours of officer training per year for all fire officers.  This one class provides all of the officer training required by ISO for the entire year.

Registration begins at 0730 on the first day of class, and the class starts promptly at 0800 each day.

You must register through the Acadis system.

There is no course fee for the class itself, but the cost of travel, lodging, meals, etc. is the responsibility of the student.  Lodging is available on campus: contact the academy for more information.  The textbook is provided, but the student should bring a pen or pencil.
