Understanding the Role of Elected Officials in Law Enforcement Oversight

Beyond the Budget: The Financial Reports Every Tennessee Municipal Official Should Understand

August 4 | Online | 6 - 7:30 p.m. CT | Free

Every financial decision made by a governing body affects the future of the community. Yet many elected officials have never received formal training on how to interpret the financial information presented at board meetings.

This practical session focuses on the financial reports Tennessee municipal elected officials should receive on a regular basis, including budget-to-actual reports, cash flow, fund balances, revenues, expenditures, debt, and capital projects and explains what those reports reveal about a municipality's financial health.

Participants will learn how to recognize important trends, ask meaningful questions, identify potential warning signs before they become problems, and use financial information to make informed policy decisions and fulfill their fiduciary responsibilities as public officials. This session is designed to build confidence with financial data while promoting transparency, accountability, and sound fiscal stewardship.
