March 16, 2026 Business Meeting Follow-Up

In-House Practical Additions
The Firefighting Commission approved the addition of HMA, HMO, FF I, and FF II to the list of certifications that are authorized for in-house practical evaluations. The administrative tasks required to roll out this initiative have been completed.

Departments will still have the ability to request the Firefighting Commission's support in hosting practical events for these certifications, if they choose. Additionally, we are working to update the final page of the skill sheets to a digitally fillable PDF document to make the process easier for Training Officers. The new forms will be uploaded to Acadis in order to replace existing forms soon.
FAO Changes
The Firefighting Commission approved to keep FAO as a course for firefighters to complete and receive dual certification. This change should be seamless for all firefighters. The major change is the receipt of a PDO and AADO certification instead of an FAO certification at the completion of all certification requirements.

Firefighters with an existing FAO certification will continue to be recognized as PDO and AADO certified.
FEMA ICS Course Completion
The Firefighting Commission is aware of the impact that the partial shutdown of the federal government is having on Tennessee firefighters. Specifically, the shutdown is impacting their ability to complete the required ICS course prerequisites for FF I and FF II. We recognize that this is outside of firefighters' control.

In response, we have developed internal measures to allow firefighters the ability to continue with testing. The Commission will place the firefighter's certification on hold until they are able to complete the required courses. This will include a notice by our staff to the firefighter along with the requirement that the firefighters submit their certificate(s) to the Commission once the shutdown is over.

Registration Cutoff Change
The existing 14-day cutoff for registrations has been changed to five days. After hearing your feedback on this, we agree that it is in the best interest of our customers to provide more time in order to submit all documentation required to be registered for an event.

It is imperative that all firefighters understand the new cutoff date and adhere to the requirement in order to prevent not being eligible to test for an event.

Minimum Number for Testing Event
The Firefighting Commission approved a minimum of five personnel for testing events. This number is intended to apply to all commission hosted testing events.

We continue to strive to take alternative measures to support events that may fall below the minimum number of five and encourage that firefighters take advantage of events to prevent a possible cancellation.
