Question: "I play 4 times a week in a club. I was wondering if you could help me get the right paddle and rubbers. My style is mostly topspins, very little pushes and blocks. I just started playing 7 months ago but my coach says I'm improving fast. What paddle and rubbers would recommend for me to improve my game? Thank you."
Answer: Hello Brian,
First of all, welcome to the sport! It is good to see that you are receiving coaching early in your development as it will help you to continue your fast improvement. Your current racket combination of Timo Boll All+ with Sriver EL is exactly what I recommend to my own students and normally I suggest that they stick with it for at least a year. It takes several years to learn all the basic techniques needed to excel in the game and during that time players should use equipment that allows the ball to stay on the racket
for a while (dwell time). This allows the muscles to feel what is happening at contact and to learn how to produce spin and speed. If you move to faster equipment to soon, you will actually slow down your learning process and your improvement. For now I would suggest you continue to use your current set-up and talk about this with your coach. Your coach can let you know when you should move to faster or different equipment base on how your personal style develops.
