I created a new web page on our Google Group, which will link to other
files, like the class notes that we just got from Amy.

Click on http://groups.google.com/group/tenglish-S2008/web/class-outline?hl=en
- or copy & paste it into your browser's address bar if that doesn't
work.

I added the lesson plan and notes for the last class to the Google
Group:

Hi, I added several files to our group page, including the lesson plan
for tomorrow. I noticed that Nick added the notes from our last class
directly to the group -- thanks, Nick!!

Next time, though, please let us know, otherwise, it's likely that no
one will notice. Just send an email to the group letting everybody
know that you've added a file. Also, I made some corrections to your
notes page -- not very many, you did an excellent job!

You can access all these files through the outline page:
Click on http://groups.google.com/group/tenglish-S2008/web/class-outline?hl=en
- or copy & paste it into your browser's address bar if that doesn't
work.

See you tomorrow,
Chris

One more thing ...
when you take notes, please add the homework assignment at the end.  This is important, in case somebody was sick or on travel, and couldn't make it to the class (also, because I sometimes forget what I assigned!)
Thanks

Thanks, Nancy, for these notes.  I've put some corrections below.

2008/3/27 小文 <babybl...@hotmail.com>:

Dear All,

Here is the report for Mar.19, I resend it to our group mail.

Part 1: some strange words phrase.

Why "strange"?  Also, you should say "words and phrases".

1.Ventilate vt. 通风,公开讨论-->Ventilation n.通风,排气

2.anecdote n.轶事(short amusing story)

3.crew of  the plane(crew:全体船员,乘务员)

4.stewardess女服务人员(female flight attendants)

5.hallucination n.幻觉

6.middle life crisis中年危机

Should be "mid-life crisis"

7whim n.幻想,狂想

8.spontaneous  adj.自发的-->spontaneity n.自觉性

9.negative adj.否定的, 否认的

10derogate v.贬损-->derogatory  n.

We almost never use this as a verb.  That is, we almost never say "derogate".

11euphemism n.委婉的说法

12.standards of living生活水平

13.well-being 健康,幸福

14.vain adj.徒劳的,空虚的,自负的-->vainglory n.

15inflation n.通货膨胀

16household appliances n.家居用具

17.funny adj.有趣的, 好笑的, 滑稽的, 奇异的, 古怪的n.滑稽人物

18.fun .n.娱乐, 玩笑, 嬉笑, 有趣的人或事物 vi.开玩笑 adj.供娱乐用的

Part 2.some useful sentence

sentence --> sentences

1.That's just sth that popped into my head.

2.She carried a bottle of oil onto the plane.

3.I didn't see it with my own eyes  -or-  I didn't see it first-hand.

4.I heard about it second-hand.

5.It's wasn't just a whim.

6.Many of westerners still think China is a third-world country.

7.It's a kind of relaxation. or It's a way of relax( As we always made such mistake that mixed the verb and noun)

"It's a way of relax" is not quite right.  You should say "It's a way to relax."

Part 3.Homework

Talk about wishes, write one paragraph that you wish to change.

Thanks for these notes... below are some corrections

Note "talk about role-play".  "role-play" means that each person acts in a role and pretends that they are in a situation.  So, you could say "Next time, we'll do some role-playing about giving advice."

These are great notes -- only one mistake that I could find!!

Don't forget next week we will have a debate about ghosts. Please see

questions and links in there to resources you can look at. I think
the more you prepare, the more you will get more from the class.

Click on http://groups.google.com/group/tenglish-S2008/web/class-outline?hl=en
- or copy & paste it into your browser's address bar if that doesn't
work.

6/18/2008 Lesson Plan:

Assign a secretary.

Talk about:
- The 60s
Review last class' topics, and talk about pros and cons of each.

- the Moon Landings

- Cognitive biases - many people take it for granted that people
from
different cultures will have different opinions. As an example,
in my
Chinese class once, we discussed the U.S. dropping the atomic bomb
on
Japan. The teacher asked me why the U.S. did that, and I started
talking about what I'd learned in school, that the main reason
was
that it was estimated that it would end the war sooner, and, in
the
long run, save lives. A Japanese classmate got very agitated and
began describing his own opinion, that the main reason was, in
fact,
to beat the USSR to Japan, and to deter them from trying to get
more
influence in the area than they did.
But, a correlary of this is: if I grew up in another culture and
under the influence of another education system, I would believe
different things from what I now do. That's hard to accept. So,
how
do we find the truth?

- Occam's Razor

- Compare the 60s in America with the Cultural Revolution

- Compare it with the pro-democracy protests in 1989

- Alternative topics: personal finance, family budgeting,
investments,
real-estate, insurance.

See you tomorrow!

6/25/2008 Lesson Plan

Assign a secretary.

Topics:
- Cognitive biases - The homework was for each person to describe
two of the biases listed on this page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cognitive_biases

- Occam's Razor

- Smoking - see handout

Topic for next time: Smoking and other bad habits.
I put three files up on the web site, you can get to all three by
following the link below and going through the class outline page.
Please have a look:
- the lesson plan
- a smoking-information brosure (same as the handout I gave you last
time)
- a sheet with tips on how to quit smoking.

students attend, though! Just a reminder, next week (the 9th) we will
not
have class.

Homework for next time:
1, Prepare to talk about the discussion questions in the lesson
plan (about
addiction):
https://groups.google.com/group/tenglish-S2008/web/20080716-LessonPlan.txt
2, Come up with at least one discussion question of your own
3, Pressure your peers to come to the next class

Also, check out the lesson plan for the next class (link above) for
the other
topic: personal finances.
