Hello everybody,As anticipated in this mailing list, I am launching an initiative to write a collaborative paper on how to get help from online communities on solving technical and bioinformatics-related topics. In principle, this will be submitted to the PLoS Computational Biology 'Ten Simple Rules' and entitled 'Ten Simple Rules for Getting Help from Mailing Lists and Online Communities'.
The original idea was to write something on the style of 'How To Ask Questions The Smart Way' by Eric Raymond, but adapted to bioinformaticians and with a gentler language. As many of you biostar users know, mailing lists and online communities can be very powerful tools for researchers and bioinformaticians, as they can provide solutions to difficult technical problems quickly, and are also a good training camp to improve our skills; however, using them require some practice, and one should learn a few rules in order to pose questions correctly.
Since it does not make sense to submit a paper on this topic without achieving some sort of community consensus first, I feel that this article should be written collaboratively. I have uploaded the first draft of the document on WikiGenes, where everybody interested will be able to contribute. After two months from now (on May 29th), I will close the manuscript and invite the top contributers to sign the article (more details on the website).
So, here it is the main website:
- Public Invitation to 'Ten Simple Rules for Getting Help from Mailing Lists and Online Communities'
even if you are not interested in contributing, feedback and suggestions are welcome!

I hope it's not only for biostar members, as I don't use biostar ;)
