Hello everybody,
thank you for the contributions to the Supplementary Table 2.

I have taken the examples posted in the Wiki and reformatted them into
a series of figures.
Now we have cases of poorly posed questions, and examples of how to
improve them. For every case, there are some comic balloons to
illustrate what can be improved and how.

I don't know how to make this file collaborative editable. I tried to
upload the file on WikiGenes or google/docs, but it loses its
formatting. The easiest thing is if you can give me comments on this
mailing list.
Can you have a look at the table, and tell me if you agree on what is
in it? Or if there is something that can be improved in a short time?

Thank you very much.

Great job Giovanni !

Supplementary material looks neat.

It will be nice if we could cite the recent ten rules on scientific reputation in the introduction section of our draft.

Best,
KS

Looks good!

One thought about the question splitting: this is true for QAs but not
necessarily for forums (?).

Hi all,

in my opinion the Table 2 is what we need; I would send it to the editor soon...

Jacopo.

Hello,

The good and bad examples are OK for me. I am not sure the colored
balloons are conventional but I believed they suite perfectly in
supplementary material.

I also agree with KS to add a reference somewhere in the introduction
to the last article from the the "ten simple rules" serie.

Cheers

P.

Hello,
I am glad that you liked the table.

Here it is the final version of the manuscript. I put some few
additions to improve the connection with the other Ten Simple Rules
paper on Maintaining a Good Reputation, that Khader was referring to.
Everything is ready, and I plan to submit everything on Monday. Enjoy
the weekend, and I will let you know soon.

cheers,
Giovanni

Hi Marco and others,

great work everyone! Sorry for nit-picking (especially at the last minute), but here are a few comments on the manuscript (Sorry, it looks like a long list, but it's really only a collection of minor points):

- " The growth of active online scientific communities, such as those listed in Supplementary Table 1, demonstrates how these tools are becoming important source of support support for an increasing number of researchers. " - there should be an "an" inserted before important and one of the instances of the word "support" should be removed.

- " Actually, asking a question in a public website is a good thing" - I believe it should be "on", rather than "in", but native speakers, please intervene if I'm wrong

- " Third, and more important, your career will be difficult if you do not learn how to get the help from other people." - Should, I think, read "more importantly"

- " Instead, a good habit is to spend a few days, after having created an account, to read the discussions published and to practice with the web interface." - the original ("reading" rather than "to read" and "practising" rather than "to practise") version was correct.

- " For example, some technical terms may be understood in a mailing list or community but not in others." - Changing "a" to "one" would make the sentence clearer

- " Many students from bachelor programs use web forums and mailing lists to copy-paste the assignments given by their teachers, and pretend other people to show them how to solve them. " - the word "pretend" is inappropriate here. Maybe you meant "call on", or "rely on" or something like that?

- " Writing in capital letters or in unconventional styles - such as that of SMS messages, is usually unwelcome, and in the long term can deteriorate your reputation online." - I think the word "text message" is more widely understood than "SMS message"

- " In certain situations, this can be a source of trouble: check the policy of your university or employer regarding posting on the Internet; avoid spreading embargoed information; and prefer using your academic/corporate email address when registering, to keep your private life separated from your work." - "prefer using" sounds odd in this context. It would be better to write "preferably use" or "if possible, use"

- " If some of the answers that you received has proven to be wrong, do not be afraid of writing it on the online discussion: this will help other people to avoid trying an erroneous solution." - should read "have" instead of "has", "in" instead of "on" and "avoid" rather than "to avoid"

- " Even when you did not receive any useful answer, sacrifice a bit of your time to thank the people who tried to help you and to explain that you were not able to find a solution." - I think "if" would be better than "when" here

- " In any case, following at least a few science-related mailing lists and contributing actively to them is a great way to come in contact with researchers working in your field, and over the time can lead you to new collaborations and new opportunities for your career." - should read "into contact" rather than "in contact"

That's all I have to complain about :D It's a great article, and you guys did an excellent job on Supplementary Table 2.

Have a nice weekend everyone,

Melanie
