 DR STEPHEN CROSS

28th February 1934 – 1st July 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Temenos Academy Fellow Dr Stephen Cross.

Stephen worked for many years as an independent documentary filmmaker. He wrote, directed and co-produced ‘The Traditional World of Islam’, six films made for the 1976 World Festival of Islam. He made many other films, for the Arts Council, the BBC, and Granada Television, about which he was typically modest. We include a list of the most important ones:

A Region of Shadow (1971) - with Laurens van der Post
The Mysterious Mr. Eliot: Aspects of T. S. Eliot (1971)
Secret World of Odilon Redon 1840-1916 (1973)
Kurosawa: The Last Samurai (1974)
W. B. Yeats and the Coming Times (1974)
Umbanda (1977)
The Eye of the Heart: The Paintings of Cecil Collins (1978)
Edge of Extinction (1980) - with Gerald Durrell
Walking in a Sacred Manner (1982)

He was deeply interested in Hinduism and its reception in the West. His books include The Elements of Hinduism; Inward Lies the Way: German Thought and the Nature of Mind, co-authored with his friend Jack Herbert; and Schopenhauer’s Encounter with Indian Thought.

As well as serving on its Academic Board, Stephen gave numerous lectures and seminars for the Temenos Academy, taught on the Foundation Course in the Perennial Philosophy, and contributed essays and reviews to Temenos Academy Review. He chaired many meetings and attended talks regularly with his wife Gay. A much-respected teacher and a friend to many at Temenos, his presence, and his scholarship, will be greatly missed.

The new Study Year gives students the opportunity to further their studies by committing to produce a much more substantial body of work than the six short essays written during the 2-year course. Study Year students will write a dissertation of between 15,000 and 20,000 words under the guidance of one of the Foundation Course tutors. In order to proceed to the Study Year, prospective students will be required to have successfully completed the 2-year Foundation Course.

Detailed information about the course and its cost is available on request, or from our website https://temenosacademy.org/study-year/
