June 2025
Saturday
14 June, 9.45am – 5pm
Marking the 15th anniversary of the publication of the book Harmony by HM King Charles III, Patron of the Temenos Academy, this study day will explore the vision set out in the book, which has since inspired multiple projects around the world. It will examine the philosophical principles the King, as Prince of Wales, felt had been undermined by some major historical shifts in mainstream thinking, and which have led to what he has called ‘our present age of disconnection’ with its accompanying spiritual and practical crises: a situation that continues to divorce us so dangerously from our true place within Nature’s life-supporting systems. The study day will be led by Ian Skelly, one of the book’s co-authors, who has continued to help the King articulate the detail of his ideas. The day will feature a range of speakers who have been inspired by Harmony. In each case they are the architects of innovative approaches and designs in which Nature’s harmonic system sits at the very heart of the process. Tickets £40
or £30 for Temenos Academy Members/Full-time Students.
Twelve-Fold Harmony: Symbol and Place CHRISTINE RHONE Wednesday 18 June In the chair Tom Bree In the light of the mythical and divine imagination, numbers are embodiments of qualities or principles rather than simply material indications of quantity or magnitude. From this perspective, the number twelve acts as a universal connector and harmoniser. It is a whole set considered as a balanced process, a cycle of becoming and transformation. In The Laws, Plato describes the ideal city of Magnesia as divided into twelve parts, an expression of the harmony that reflects the cycle of the constellations. This twelve-part territorial tradition was widespread in the ancient world. Today we still count hours, minutes and circular distances using the Babylonian system based on sixty, a multiple of twelve. The archetypal mandala of twelve can also be considered a tool of anamnesis, of ‘not forgetting’ the One and the Oneness of Being. In this talk, Christine Rhone will show how the number twelve is a symbol of that traditional philosophy by which it is possible to see how every element in nature, and every tribe and individual, has a legitimate place within a divine and potentially paradisial Creation.
