In years past, I have told parents that the High School Honor Students need community service hours (my daughter did this in Marshfield) and can tutor students for free. Please, call me here at the Jacobs (11:15-11:45) to discuss whether this is appropriate for your student. Thank you in advance, and as always, for your help this year.
Students are to make test corrections on graph paper and write a reflection about the assessment. Studying more, labeling numbers, using math vocabulary, being more careful etc.... should be some of the sentences written in the reflection.
Unfortunately, there was an unexpected fire drill during Mrs. Lowry's students' math class. We lost 20 minutes. Students will be given extra time tomorrow to finish the test. Study again, if not done with the test.
Students should be bringing home their Math Journal #1 today. It can be kept at home but students should be doing skipped math boxes and checking answers for PIRATE GOLD here at school. As I have said before, the Math Boxes are a great review for MCAS. Please, help your student by making sure they are doing this "Extra Credit" .
The students were given a review packet (study guide) of everything that is on the Unit 4 assessment. We reviewed the packet today and students were told to bring home their math materials to study. Where it says "explain" students should try to be using math vocabulary...For example...I multiplied the factor 5 Liters by the conversion factor 1000 mL/L to get the product/total of 5000mL.
Math Skills: Multiplication....extended facts multiplication; converting Kilograms to Grams; Converting Liters (L) to milliliters (mL); estimating answers; solving multi-step number stories. Area of "rectangles" with missing sides involved
The students were given a review packet (study guide) of everything that is on the Unit 4 assessment. They had a chance to work in partnerships and were told to bring home their math materials to study. Where it says "explain" students should try to be using math vocabulary...For example...I multiplied the factor 5 Liters by the conversion factor 1000 mL/L to get the product/total of 5000mL.
Your student should be able to show you this method. Please, feel free to show them "U.S. Traditional" method as a second way to check their answers. (The way we were taught growing up)...We will be getting to it soon.
Extra Credit....Doing extra skipcounts and frenzies....I mentioned and have mentioned in the past about students doing extra skip/frenzy and Math Boxes (checking answers with my ANSWER KEY) for PIRATE GOLD.
If a Student does the CW (classwork)and HW side of worksheet...a student will get 2 pieces of "Pirate Gold"...an incentive for students who need more practice and repetition. The Math Boxes are a great review for the end of the year.
Math skills: Find equivalent fractions using fraction models (or multiplying the fraction by 2/2 or 3/3, etc.); comparing fractions using a fraction model; comparing decimals using base 10 grids; read and write decimals to the hundredths place; converting centmeters to millimeters (X10)
Find equivalent fractions using a model; Comparing fractions using a model; read and write decimal numbers; represent decimals to the hundredths place using a model; convert centimeters to millimeters; comparing decimals using a model
Making rectangular arrays (Ex. for 14.....1row x14 columns; 14 rows x 1column...2x7 and 7x2); list factors and multiples; know when to add or multiply in a word problem; Find the area of a rectangle; convert hours to minutes; identify the properties of a quadrilateral (parallel vs perpendicular; types of angles inside shape...etc); lines of symmetry; What's My Rule? table
Students look through their tests, correct and reflect on areas that they need to work on and study. For example, labeling the numbers in an equation and using math vocabulary words in an explanation. Some need to read the question more carefully or are still having trouble with rounding or subtraction.
Drawing rectangular arrays; listing factors and multiples of numbers; finding area of rectangles; converting hours to minutes; knowing when to multiply in a word problem; naming the properties of shapes; lines of symmetry; What's My Rule?(In and Out table)...added by me to the Everyday Math assessment (multiplying a 4 x 1......5,689 x 7=? and a ...2 x 2 equation...34 x 25=?)...I will show them "partitioning rectangles" strategy first but then US Traditional..(The way we learned). Students could use both ways to "check" their answers.
You and your student should read it; save the vocabulary words for home studying use; and put the partial HOME LINK answers on the refridgerator just in case you need an answer key to help with your students' HW.
Home Link 1-7..."US Traditional Addition"...ESTIMATE then solve....There is no single correct way for estimation #'s used. It should be quick and easy for your student to use. (Rounding (to a specific place) or Front End)
Mrs. Lin will be the room parent this year. She is sending home a form for all Parents/Guardians to fill out so that you may be contacted for upcoming events. Please, look for it tonight. (Thank You, Mrs. Lin!)
