Hi,

Those telugu names are hardcoded into the image files. We can't search in telugu.

If Yahoo has stored the unicode version of the place names in the database, they just need to provide unicode query capability similar to that present for English. This is already done for some languages. For example: Go to http://maps.yahoo.com and type in 東京 ('Tokyo' in Japanese) , and see the result. Of course, the ideal vernacular site would be similar to this: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2305/2389362320_0939596196_o.png

Another observation is that the Telugu font embedded within the image is Vemana font.

Have they really embedded Vemana ? I doubt it. They have apparently
typed in the entries in Vemana and converted the whole into .png image
file.

If they have only pre-runtime, readymade images with Indian script 'burnt' into them (looks like this is the case now), without any unicode place names stored and mapped in the database, then they definitely do have a long way to go.
