Can any one throw light on why when we give monetary gifts, ( say in a
wedding or some such celebration), they are multiples of 116 (noota
padaharlu) or 58 (artha noota padaharlu) or 1116 (veyyi nootapadaharlu) ?

When one of my non-Telugu friends asked me this question, I realized that I
do not have (credible or otherwise) an answer. I just follow what my mom
told me to.

any help is hereby thanked in advance.

I got some info on this 116 gift money.

All this started in Nizam ruling when British are also part of India.  Telangana is riled by Nizam and another part of the Telugu state is ruled by British.

for Puja and other functions, 100 rs are given to brahmins and if they exchange in the British region they used to get 94 RS after-tax are paid.

Brahmin priest are not happy with this money exchange as they are getting 6 rupees less when they exchange money.

so Nizam has ordered to give 116 so that they can get 100 rupees. :-)
