Thank you for the nice words. Credit goes to IIIT for making such
wonderful dictionary available in open source and to Microsoft for
supporting Telugu via UNICODE.
Yes, the site uses dynamic fonts to display Telugu text. I do believe
I am obeying the copyright laws for the font in question (embedding
is different from redistributing). Yes, I am also familiar with
Pothana2000 font, in fact, I am shipping it with my product for non-
XP users. For the same reason you quoted (too small) I could not use
that font on these pages.
I have not made any changes to the dictionary (besides making it good
for conversion into UNICODE etc.) But if people like you are willing
to make the changes I can add the concept of editors, reviewers etc.
to make a truly worthwhile dictionary.
Click on "Search in meaning" (and not Partial Match) when you would
search using a Telugu word in the meaning. For easier testing, pick a
word that came up in the search.
If any Mac OS X (or earlier?) users are reading this: my request to
you please try the dictionary page and give me your feedback.
Appreciate more feedback.

Srinivas

Thanks! I too would like to join in congratulating you on the great job you
have done.
Quick question - did I miss something, because I don't see any obvious way
of generating Telugu Unicode to type in! To try out the feature, I used cut
and paste on one of the meanings displayed by first searching the English
word; It works fine, but perhaps an RTS interface might be helpful? Anyway,
I picked బంగారం and it generated a whole range of unrelated English
words (alchemist, artificial, angel etc ..). So I guess a lot more work is
required to develop suitable algorithms to do a reverse lookup, more like a
full time research project!!

Sreenivaas^ gaaru,
The dictionary doesn't display the Telugu fonts either in the OS X mode or
the classic mode (OS 9.2.2). I tried both IE 5.2 (for OS X) and IE 5.1 (for
the classic). All you see is a bunch of inverted question marks (?). Sorry!

Thank you for all the feedback.
(1) Yes, your observation is correct. There is no web based mechanism for
generating UNICODE on the dictionary Yet!
I have created a product called Aksharamala IE Companion which would be
available free for the users (and works on Aksharamala and other enabled web
sites).
For those of you who are interested can read the information at the link
below:
http://www.aksharamala.com/aksie/
The link or the product is not public yet, and it is still in beta, install
it only if you are comfortable testing beta products.
(2) Search mechanism, based on your feedback I have made some changes for
searching within meaning. Now, by default it matches only when the word is
found in the beginning. Trying the same search query బంగారు is yielding
much better result now. Here is the link for it:
I have two more links to show definitions for తల్లి
http://tinyurl.com/4iul (matches records when తల్లి is found in the
beginning)
http://tinyurl.com/4ium (matches records when తల్లి is found anywhere)
Of course, nevertheless, these mechanisms are crude and not 100% accurate.
Do give me feedback after trying it out further.

Srinivas

Dr.Rao Vemuri, who's also a member of this group, has created an
English-Telugu and an Telugu-English dictionary recently. It can be
bought in India (Price in A.P. is Rs.165/- for each) or abroad ($30?).
I am not sure if a soft copy of this exists, though. And, can someone
tell me if there's an English-Telugu-English (combo of the above two)
version of these dictionaries?
Thanks in advance,

Dear Vemuri Gaaru (and Srinivas Annam),
I realize we have to learn to walk before running, but .. once this
material is computerized, it might be possible to extract more value from it
by creating an appropriate front end for it; Could you think of how to make
this work as an Telugu->English dictionary/Wordfinder (by a reverse search
through the Telugu explanations), a Telugu Thesaurus, a (very crude)
translator etc ..

(a) It sounds like your publisher used ISFOC fonts from CDAC. Yes, it
is possible to convert these or other non-UNICODE fonts into UNICODE.
It would be nice if you can find out from your publisher if they can
export the files into ISCII encoding format. If the files are in
ISCII they can further converted into UNICODE by using MS Word 2002
(aka Word XP). For any other format, I can help you with a converter
based on Aksharamala engine.
(b) Once the data is in UNICODE facilities like search, add, edit can
be easily added to the web pages.

Srinivas

Sreenadh gaaru,
Since I have sent my original message I have added the feature to
search through meanings. The word to be searched can be specified in
Telugu (UNICODE) and works great!
I have also updated the search page by giving a download to update
one's system to be capabile of displaying Telugu UNICODE text. Those
of you who have received the CD at Detroit Telugu Sadassu can also
install from it.
Btw, I request those of you with Mac OS X to test this page to see if
they can read it please...

Regards,
Srinivas
PS: Do you know anyone trying to sell a old Mac (it should be capable
of running OS X 10.2)?
--- In racch...@yahoogroups.com, "Sreenadh Jonnavithula"
Following is the link for Charles Brown's English to Telugu
dictionary in its searchable form (using Unicode database):
http://www.aksharamala.com/telugu/e2t/
* This dictionary is converted from ISCII version of the same made
available by IIIT.
* This dictionary contains more than 30,000 words in it.
* Lot of hand editing was needed before the file was fit to
conversion.
* Some entries could not make it as the source didn't have them in
the proper format.
Although, I have taken lot of time and pain to convert this, I am
having my doubts on its usefulness. As the dictionary says it was
originally printed in 1853, and obviously it has the concepts and
definitions of that time. So I started to wonder why not create a
modern-day English to Telugu dictionary by a collective effort of all
the Telugu people. This can be a truly wonderful project. I am
willing to support it from my end by giving the technical know-how
and support for anyone interested. If each person contributes 2 words
per week we can have a collection of 10,000 words in a year assuming
100 people contribute regularly.
Any takers?

Srinivas Annam
