So far my understanding was that the gender for "Guru" is unisex.
( by this I mean, whether the person is a male or female both are referred
to as Guru ji)
But, I am told there is a feminine equiv. for it in other Indian languages.
Do we have any in TELUGU ? If so ....... can any one throw some light ?

Thanks

IMHO - Guru Ma = Wife of Guru - Those days Shishyas were residents at Guru's
house.

The feminine form is: guruNi.

Cheers... Saradhi.

Like Anil (Kurnool) writes, Guru Ma is probably for the gurupatni. గురూఅయిన్ is what we learnt as feminine form of గురు in Hindi.

గుర్వీ or గుర్విణీ is the feminine form of గురూ.
Similarly, ప్రభ్వీ is the feminine form of ప్రభూ.
గుర్వీ or గుర్విణీ also means a preagnant woman.

Thanks every one for the posts so far. I learnt something new.
What I heard is "gurvI" ( in Oriya) . "gurviNi" is a new variant. Thank you
mohana garu !
Looks like it all flows from Sankrit.

another sub-question:
Is there some kind of "rule"/"formula" that establishes this ? ( say,
something like du, mu vu, lu ?)
( I was just thinking, if గ్రుహిణి is the female form, then what is the
male form ? Is there one ? can we derive it with a "formula" ?)
