గడచిన సంవత్సరములో నేను తిరుప్పావై తెలుగుసేతలను
సప్తపది రూపముగా అందజేసిన సంగతి మీకు గుర్తు
ఉందనుకొంటా. ముద్దుపళనియో లేక ఆమె గురువుగారో
వ్రాసిన పది సప్తపదులను, అదే శైలిలో నేను వ్రాసిన
20 సప్తపదులను మీకు పరిచయము చేసినాను. ఈ యేడు
తిరుప్పావై పాశురములను పాటల రూపములో ఇస్తున్నాను.
ప్రతి దానికి ఆంగ్లములో కూడ అనువాదమును జతపరుస్తున్నా.
ఈ పాటలు, అనువాదములు తమిళ మూలమునకు ప్రతి పదార్థము
కాదు. అందులోని సారాంశమును తీసికొని పాటగా అల్లాను.
ఆంగ్లములోని తర్జుమా కూడ తెలుగు పాటకు కొద్దిగా భిన్నముగా
ఉండవచ్చు. ఇక్కడ కూడ gistను మాత్రమే ఇచ్చాను.
మీ అనుకూలమునకై పోయిన సంవత్సరములో వ్రాసిన దానిని
కూడ సూచనగా ఇస్తున్నాను. తప్పొప్పులను దయయుంచి
తెలుపగలరు.

Today
is the first day of God's month.
Today
is the first day of our dedication.
Let us
purify ourselves
to fulfill our vows.
Beautiful young lasses
of this pastoral paradise,
let us all go
and celebrate -
Yashoda's darling is smiling!
Let us feast our eyes
with his wondrous form -
dark as the monsoon cloud,
strong as the lion's cub,
and handsome as the full moon,
Let us sing for Him.

from దేవులపల్లి కృష్ణ శాస్త్రి, లకష్మణ యతీంద్రులు, పి.
వేణుగోపాల రావు (ఆంగ్లం), ముళ్ళపూడి వెంకటరమణ and now, శ్రీ
మోహనరావు. బాపు was inspired to draw a whole series of paintings
for these పాసురంs, which have now been published in a book form
four different times!
What is it about this work that attracts them all so much?

Thanks for the translations, especially for those who don't
know Tamil. Fortunate are those who can enjoy these in Tamil
itself. I wish to know Tamil just to enjoy more Tiruppaavai and
Tirukkural. And also Avadhi to enjoy Ramcharitmaanas. I can only
imagine the difficulty in such translating efforts.
If some asks a Telugu person to translate Pothana or Tyagaraja,
it would be reason both for joy and agony! Joy in wanting to share,
and agony for not able to do so fully! More one enjoys a particular
piece, more likely is one dissatisfied by any translation!
Just sharing few lines of Devulapalli Krishna Sastri that touched
me from his renderings.

(Note the beautiful sound alliteration on కొమ్మ! In first line,
కొమ్మ refers to branch; in second కొమ్మలారా refers to women!)

Who can forget the beautiful song penned by Devulapalli
and sung by Sri RangaM Gopalaratnam (?). I hope I got the singer
right, even though I heard it so many times!

These are some of the things that inspired me to undertake
the appreciation of tiruppAvai. I am NOT religious by nature.
My religious traits are more cultural and literary than strictly
religious. One need not be religious to appreciate good poetry,
be it in the Bible, or in the vEdAs or in tiruppAvai.
I donot have any pretensions of being a kRshNA SAstri or some
such great poet. Again, my philosophy in this undertaking is -
a) give the original, b) give a metrical version, c) give
a song format, and d) give an English translation. The first
two were done last year and I am attempting to do the later
two this year. Then this will be ready for publication, if
there were a publisher! As far as the songs go, the pallavi
has been chosen by me in such a way that in my opinion it
forms the theme of the pASuram. As for the music in it, these
have to be sung to produce music. Some of the greatest songs
of even master composers are just ordinary if one places
the music aside for a moment.
I hope the readers will bless me in my attempts.
