[racchabanda] Difference between Culture, Tradition and Custom

Dear Racchabandaites,

I am curious to know what is the line that separates Culture
(Samskruti), Tradition (Sampradayam) and Custom (paddati)?

Does Culture necessarily need to have a fine art component?
Is Tradition a way of life?
Are Customs a set of rules in the society?

For example is "koochipuDi" our culture or tradition etc? Could you
provide some examples in each category.

culture is something to do with large group
like andhra culture, indian culture, western culture

traditon is soemthing small group from large group follows

custom is something smallestl group from small group follows
like adapaduchu lanchanalu puchhukovatam kondari paddati:)

To make life easy and livable, would you be content with the answer that "Koochipoodi" is just a place? :-)))

I am tempted to point out a difference between the English and
Telugu usages. I may be wrong; but anyway, here is my
point of view.

పై నిర్వచనాలు చాలా దగ్గరగా వస్తాయి. కాని, ఇంగ్లీషు
లో ఉన్న culture తెలుగు సంస్కృతీ ఒకటి కావీమో
అనిపిస్తుంది. ఇంగ్లీషు వాడుక వ్యక్తావ్యక్తాలు
(implicit and explicit) రెంటినీ సుచిస్తుందనుకుంటాను.
ఒక గుంపుకి ఉన్న ఎన్నో అలవాట్లూ, ప్రవర్తనలూ, సంస్కృతీ,
సంప్రదాయాలూ, అన్నిటినీ కలిపి ఇంగ్లీషు లో culture
అంటున్నారు. వీటిలో చాలా మట్టుకు వారు అవ్యక్తంగా
తెలుసుకుని వాడుతున్నవి కావచ్చు. కొన్ని మాత్రం
స్పష్టం గా కట్టుబాటు చేసినవీ, సంప్రదాయం
ద్వారా నిలబెట్టినవీను.

In w.g.dt, people say ఆఇ for అవును. We can say it is
a 'cultural trait'. No one controls it; nevertheless, it spreads.
We say 'work culture', 'business culture', 'gay and lesbian culture'.
I find it ఎబ్బెట్టు to replace the word with సంస్కృతి ;-))
For us సంస్కృతి seems to implicitly refer to accepted and
(tightly) controlled norms ?

పద్ధతి అనే కంటీ కట్టుబాటు, అచ్చుబాటు సరైన
పదాలీమో ?

సంప్రదాయం seems to refer to a process, a method
of handing down a custom down the time line - from one
generation to another. When I use the word 'custom', I seem
to refer to 'a rule'. When I use 'tradition', I seem to think
of 'a process'.
