Interesting to note - it is "beebhatsa" and not "bheebhatsa"!

While we're at బీభత్స రసం, I remember reading SreeSree quoting
more than once that కన్యాశుల్కం is బీభత్స-రస-ప్రధానం (the
wording might be different, but he mentioned something like
బీభత్సం was portrayed well in కన్యాశుల్కం). I wanted to know
the basic idea he tried to portray there.

Thanks in advance,
NaChaKi.

NaChaKi gaaru,

After learning about this rasam from those
knowledgeable people, it is interesting to know that
Sri Sri has said those words about Kanyasulkam.
Can you try to get more details in this context to
know what exactly was said and what were the other
details, please?

Regards,
Prasad

వారు, "as Sita, she shows disgust toward her
abductor, the demon Ravana" అన్నారు.

bheebhatsa means jugupsa or disgust. A sidebar-
They are producing a movie entitled bheebhatsa where
the story revolves around child abuse. That should give
an idea of what the word means. Regards! - m

>>Ofcourse this does not explain why Arjuna got the title "bIbhatsa"

Why not? I thought it does, if "devastating" is considered as an
allowable meaning of బీభత్స. The way Arjuna uses his bow and arrows
(infinite too, so no limit whatsoever on the usage!) terrifically and
swings arrows in all directions, right to the target without taking
much time to aim. Such a turmoil created by him is quite comparable to
that of a తుపాను. If తుపాను is బీభత్సం, so is Arjuna.

This is just what *I* feel. Please correct me if I am wrong.

None of the dictionaries I have (I have many) explicitly gave the
meaning of the word "bhIbhatsa rasaM". But the word "bhIbhatsa" means
"asahyakaramaina", according to Sabdaratnakaram (the only dictionary
that even bothered to list this as a separate entry). In others it
was just listed as on of the navarasas.

I recall seeing in a foot note of one of Sri Velcheru Narayanarao's
books (I have only two, so I will presently do an exhaustive search
of those) the English equivalents of "navarasas." If I find it, I
will post another message.

Ramana Sonti, one of our raccabaMDa members, did a wonderful job
translating poems from "madhushaala," of the famous Hindi poet Harivansh
Rai Bachchan. You can enjoy the translation at

Thanks a lot to Sri Rao Vemuri gAru, Sri J K Mohana
Rao gAru, and Sri V.S.T.SAYEE gAru.

You all saved my face.

My understanding was wrong. The dance teacher was
correct.

Better, I did not talk to the teacher without taking
the information from you all knowledeable people.
Initially I thought I was very correct and I could
directly talk to the teacher. Then after thinking for
a while, I thought why shouldn't I consult you all
first and then decide on the matter. I am very happy
that I have taken a right decision to consult you all.

Thanks once again to you all for giving the correct
information.

Regards,
Prasad
