[racchabanda] Telugu films based on stories and novels

I was just idly counting the number of telugu
films based on stories and novels written and
published by shotr story writers and novelists.
There are of course films based on Sarat stories
like dEvadAsu, tODikODaLLu, bATasAri. Then
we have kanyASulkaM, aekavIra and DAkTar chakravarti.
May be baMgArupApa (of padmarAju ?). I am not able
to go beyond this. The others are written especially
for movies. Could the readers expand this list.
I admit that my knowledge of telugu films beyond
seventies is next to nothing. Still, I believe
that novels do not seem to be a fertile field for
telugu movies.

Here is something from my files, dated 30.Nov.1996. I posted a series of
messages on old usenet group: soc.culture.indian.telugu those days. I
hope that the following tabular format doesn't get messed up.
Almost all the earliest films were based on stage plays by popular
"naaTaka manDali-s" of those days. bhakta prahlaada (surabhi), paadukaa
paTTaabhishEkam & Sakuntala (yaDavalli's), sakkubaayi (mailavarapu
samaajam), kanakataara (dommETi & kannaamba's troup), taaraa SaSaankam
(raajaraajESwari), SreekRshNa tulaabhaaram (muttaraaju's pay),
SaSirEkhaa pariNayam (a.k.a. maayabajaar - adapted from Marathi stage),
chintaamaNi (kaaLLakoori), etc. etc.
The followed criteria is that the story/play/article was originally NOT
written for the film!!!

I think the last movie in the list should be "sooryachandra" (co-starring Jayaprada). I am not sure if there's another movie by the title mentioned above.

Some novels such as వెన్నెల్లో ఆడపిల్ల, తులసిదళం (Yandamuri), మేఘమాల (Malladi), మనో యజ్ఞం (Suryadevara) are made as tele-serials. I am sure more works of each of the above authors, and of more such authors (including female novelists that are not included due to lack of knowledge on my side) were made as movies. Furthermore, at least a few of these, and more, have written particularly for movies too.
I remember that works of Kommanapalli Ganapathi Rao, Kommuri Venugopala Rao, Yerramsetti Sai, Lalladevi, "Vasundhara", Ranganayakamma, Yaddanapudi Sulochana Rani, et al. have also been translated for presentation on the silver screen.

praaNamitrulu is based on the play (and the film) Beckett (also in
Hindi as Namak Haram by Hrisikesh Mukherjee)
saakshi is based on the film High Noon, which in turn was based on
a short story, The Tin Badge (I think).

graamdEvatalu is based on the Gogol play, Inspector General
balipeeTham - novel of the same name by raMganaayakamma

విచిత్రబంధం was the film based on vijEta.
The URL supplied by Sreenivas in an earlier message gives a more
complete list of films based on novels by యద్దనపూడి.
అన్నపూర్ణా Films probably has the distinction of making the most
number of films based on novels. While their earlier pictures were
based on non-Telugu books, they made several films based on Telugu
novels, particularly by those of yaddanapooDi: ఆత్మీయులు, జై జవాన్
(these two films came as Emesco pocketbooks), ప్రేమలేఖలు,
రాధాకృష్ణ, విచిత్రబంధం (విజేత), and బంగారు కలలు. They
also produced చదువుకున్న అమ్మాయిలు (కాలాతీతవ్యక్తులు - డా.
స్రీదేవి) and డాక్టర్ ఛక్రవర్తి (చక్రభ్రమణం - కోడూరి
కౌసల్యాదేవి).
రామానాయుడు (Suresh films etc) produced yaddanapooDi's సెచ్రెటరీ
as well as ఆరెకపూడి nee కోడురీs ప్రేమనగర్ and
చక్రవాకం.
యద్దనపూడి's మీనా marked the directorial debut of విజయనిర్మల
under her home banner.
కొమ్మూరి వేణుగోపాలరావు had two novels filmed: one was హారతి; I
do not remember the title of the novel or the film; the film is now on
Teja TV frequently starring Krishna and sreedevi along with Rao
gopalarao and Manjula. All the lead characters work in a pharmaceutical
company owned by Rao Gopalarao in an anti-missamma type of situation
comedy. The novel was originally serialized in Andhrajyoti weekly.
మాదిరెడ్డి సులోచన had a few novels filmed. తరం మారింది was
already mentioned. Mr. Sampat, MA was filmed as ఈతరం మనిషి.
There is another novel that I do not recall immediately (two word
phrase, both words starting with M; produced by a daggubaaTi, not
raamaanaayuDu).
వాసిరెడ్డి సీతాదేవి's సమత was filmed as ప్రజానాయకుడు. The
film ఆమెకథ was also based on one of her novels (I am not sure if
the novel has the same name). Director కె. రాఘవేంద్ర రావు and
Producer క్రాంతి కుమార్ who produced ఆమె కథ also filmed
జ్యోతి based on another novel.
కె.రామలకష్మి (ఆరుద్ర's wife) supplied the stories for
జీవనజ్యోతి and గోరింటాకు.
పోలాప్రగడ సత్యన్నారాయణ మూర్తి's కౌసల్య was filmed as
తల్లితండ్రులు.
మంథా వెంకటరమణారావు's కొలువు (swaati novel supplement, a
prizewinner, I think) was filmed as చలిచీమలు.
CS Rao Of ఊరుమ్మడి బతుకులు had another of his plays, ప్రాణం
ఖరీదు filmed under the same name (by క్రాంతి కుమార్). His novel
కమలమ్మ కమతం was also filmed under the same name.
గణేష్ పాత్రో's పావలా and కొడుకు పుట్టాల were two of the
threads in the film, నాకూ స్వతంత్రం వచ్చింది.
రావి శాస్త్రి's play - నిజం, and కాళీపట్నం రామారావు's
యజ్నం were filmed with the same titles as did కొర్రపాతి
గంగాధరరావు's లంబాడోళ్ళ రామదాసు.
Of course, everybody should be knowing about చలం's గ్రహణం
being recently filmed excellently under the same name by ఇంద్రగంటి మోహనకృష్ణ.
బి.ఎస్. నారాయణ who directed ఊరుమ్మడి బతుకులు came up with
another award winner in నిమజ్జనం based on a Malayalam novel.
While talking about films based on English classics, గుమ్మడి recently
mentioned that బి.ఎన్. రెడ్డీ's రాజమకుటం was based on Hamlet.
Sreenivas probably mentioned that King Lear was the base for
గుణసుందరి కథ, as was the Alladin's magic lamp being the base for
పాతాళభైరవి.
Looking back at this list, it appears as if the 70s were a great time
in Telugu for films based on books and plays.

సి. ఆనందరామం's novel.

I read that మునిపల్లె రాజు supplied the story for
పూజాఫలం. I am not
sure if it was published before or not.
I wonder if చీకటి వెలుగులు (కృష్ణ, పద్మ ప్రియ)
was based on a novel
too. The plot theme where the hero suffers from
amnesia is pretty close
to a కలల రాణి's story line. :-)
Does రాధా గోపాళం qualify in this list?
BTW, Tagore's నౌకాడూబీ was (later translated into
English) the basis for
చరణదాసి.

బెళదింగళ బాలె with Anant Nag in the lead was based on the Kannada
translation of the novel, I guess.
My comment- I think the book was not translated into
Kannada.
(Or, was the novel translated after the movie was made?) The movie "Hello, I
love you!" was a very poor screen version of the novel, and is not a dubbed
version. OTOH, వెన్నెల్లో ఆడపిల్ల was made as a TV serial under the direction
of the writer himself. I didn't get to watch the serial, but people who saw it
said that it was far better than the (Telugu) movie version. However, I was
always told that the Kannada movie is really very well made.
My comment- I'm going to watch it soon.

NTR's son-in-law, Dr. Daggubati Venkateswara Rao, produced a couple (?) of
movies in the past. సత్యం-శివం, the last combination of NTR and ANR, was
produced by him. Could it be that movie or something else under his production,
I don't know. (There's another Daggubati, outside of Ramanaidu family, I can
think of, in the Telugu film industry - Daggubati Raja is an actor; I don't
think he produced any movie.)

I recently came to know that this movie, which marks Ganesh Patro's film debut,
is based on three, not two, plays. Sri Atluri can possibly throw more light on
this.

The movie గ్రహణం was based on Chalam's దోషగుణం, IIRC.
BTW, director Vamsy (సితార, మంచుపల్లకి, అన్వేషణ fame) was also
planning to make a movie or two based on his own works written in the past. I
am unable to recollect much about it at this time.

That reminds me that సితార , the film that catapulted వంసీ
to fame was based on his own novel మహల్లో కోకిల .

The Kannada film precedes the Telugu version by several years. It
was directed by Girish Karnad and produced by GV Iyer.

I believe that it is a published short story.

చీకటి వెలుగులు is one of the many adapatations of an English
novel (and film), Random Harvest (పవిత్రబంధం with ANR is
another one). I remember somebody associated with cheekaTivelugulu
boasting at that time that theirs was the most close to the original.
(About the same time, HG Wells' Half a Sixpence was adapted as
బాబు, the debut film of Director K. Raghavendra Rao. It was the
costliest film of the time and bombed big time; he redeemed himself
with a series of novel based black and white low budget films like
జ్యోతి, ఆమె కథ.)

Other than the title and the names of the lead characters, no
elements of the series made it to the film. So, I don't think it
qualifies. However, అందాల రాముడు takes several elements and
characters from జనతా ఎక్స్ప్రెస్, but not the main theme.
Another novel that made it to the big screen is కొమ్మిరెడ్డి
విశ్వమోహన రెడ్డి's మారణహోమం; the film stars Krishna and
Sudhakar; the name may be భోగిమంటలు.
పాలగుమ్మి పద్మరాజు's నల్లరేగడి was made into a film (may
be by the same name) by the same group that made చీకటివెలుగులు;
it starred Krishna.
గోపిచంద్'s short story ధర్మవడ్డీ was made into a film by
the same name by అనుపమ films of KB Tilak.
Let us not forget that కొమ్మూరి సాంఅశివరావు's Detective
యుగంధర్ and his able assistant రాజు made it to celluloid in
the novel based film పట్టుకుంటే లక్ష. విజయబాపినీడు's
జగత్కిలాడీలు was adapted into a film by the same name, but the
writing credit was given to విశ్వప్రసాద్.

The film 'nakilee manishi' is also based on a detective novel, which I think
is written by him. This stars Chirnajeevi in his first double role.

Regarding the comment that in 1970s and 80s more films were based on
popular plays/stories, I should have a 2nd look at films from 50s and 60s.

I never knew copying can extend to grand-father's generation!
tErE mErE svapnE itself was based on A J Cronin's Citadel,
both in its plot and many scenes in the movie. Not a
word of acknowledgement. In those days, i used to read
Cronin's and Shute's books voraciously. It was therefore
impossible for me to miss the blatant plagiarism.
