@
Madam!
ADDATA is a group game without money and will be very entertaining.
Addata is played by four, six, eight, twelve players.
they will become equal number of two groups.
They sit alternatively.( No two members of one group can sit side by side)
cards 9, 10, Jack, Qween, King, Ace of four colours of one pack will be used. total cards will be 24 out of 52 cards of single pack. any no. of packs can be used. (2 or 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 or more)
the order of 6 cards will be like this
Ace, ten, King, Qween, Jack and lastly nine. ( For all colours except trump colour)
Order in trump colour will be like this
Jack, nine, ace, ten, king, qween
value of cards will be like this
ace-11 ten -10 king- 3 qween- 2, jack- 1 nine - 0
in trump colour the values vary
Jacky - 20, nine- 14, ace- 11, ten -10, king- 3, qween- 2
total cards will be shuffuled clockwise equally for all players. the person who shuffules is final in deciding the trump. first player to start with. he should declare whether he can decide the trump colour without anoncing it. (if he wants to decide he has to say ATA only). next to him will say Pass or ATA( means he wants to decide the trump.) it will go on. finally shuufling player can say ATA or Pass). the trump will be decided for the game.
then the play will be started.
first card will be played by number one player( irrespective of who declares the game) every player has to play the same color unless he wants to CUT with trump. ( if a player CUT with say king, other one can CUT with higher valued card.). those who takes the Pattu will play the next Card of the game.
The aim of the game is to restrict the opposition to not get 47 or more marks of one pack by those who decides the trump. After game is over, the cards ( Pattulu) will be counted as explained above. If opposition gets the required 47 then they will be treated as won that game. if 6 players are playing, value of game if trump is said by first player will be 1. second will be 2. Shuffling player ( 6th Player) will be 6( Highest)
if a group wins they will get that many Pattus. and other party has to clear those Pattulu by winning next game. Those who are at loss ( APPU) has to continue shuffling as punishment. if the Total loss reaches 47, then the loosers have to salam the jack.
ADDU can be said by other party if they are confident of defeating the Trump Party. But it is to be said by one of the opposition player without consulting his group members. Then the value of the game will be doubled.
PAI ADDU can be said by trump party. then the value of the game willbe three times.
KOTU can be said. it means challenge by one player that opposition will not get even one Pattu. in this case, who declares Kotu will start playing the first card. His group will not play. Addu can be said by opposition for Kotu also. The value of game will become 10 if he wins. if he looses by giving one pattu the value of game will be 12.
There are many other rules. the first dropped card will be heigher above the same card in some places. second card will be treated as higher by some body. Position of ten in the order of value is different in some places. there is some thing called TODU which can be said by other player of the group who declares trump. If he thinks that other party will not get single pattu he can say TODU. ( which is called Joint also). if they win the value of game will become total of the values of those two players.

Thanks for the detailed description Murthy garu. I procrastinated and you beat me to it!
(I'm glad you did it first. I realized that I didn't remember all of them.)

Your comment on other rules in different places reminded me of the variations. I've seen
this game played (acutally played too) in several villages and no two had exactly the same
rules, although the essence of the game remains the same. The minor variations were
causes for heated arguments too!

I just wanted to add a few notes to your post. Of course, these could simply be West
Godavari (that too West of Eluru canal, so called, upland area or రెడ్డిసీమ) variations!

A four player game is usually played with two decks and each addition of two players add
one more deck. The value of points for the oppostition to win the game will be 47 for each
deck used (94, 141, etc.).

To reduce the cost of buying more decks of cards, it is common to use cards 3 to 8 as
substitutes for regular ones. The designations for them are: Jack for 8, 9 for 7, Ace for 6,
King for 5, Queen for 4, and 10 for 3. This designation may sound awkward but this
follows the trump suit value order.

Unlike in other card games like Rummy, Bridge, etc., the cards are distributed 6 at a time
to each player. Again this may be another variation but we distribute the cards
anticlockwise in అడ్డాట.

The names of cards 9 and 10 are మణేల and త్రీంచా, respectively. I don't know the
origin of the names or if this nomenclature is universal. Here is the full Telugu version of
the names of cards: జాకీ, మణేల, ఆసు, రాజు, మదాం, త్రీంచా.

Since we always played with a minimum of two decks, if no one calls ఆట after the
distribution of the first six cards each, they all drop the cards and the second set of 6
cards each are distributed. If the second distribution also fails a declaration of ఆట,
then the entire set is reshuffled and distribution starts again. If the second distribution
resulted in the declaration of an ఆట, then the dropped cards are reshuffled and
distributed. In any case, the ఆట is declared only with six cards in hand and the second
set of six cards are distributed after the తురుపు is known.

One other way of declaring the తురుపు is by dropping జాకీలు. Instead of saying
ఆట, one may decide to drop two or more Jacks of different suits. This supercedes
anyone who says ఆట. The idea is that the person dropping the Jacks will declare the
trumph from the suits of the dropped Jacks after the second set of six cards are dealt and
the పట్లు for that game will a product of the declaring hand times the total number of
Jacks dropped. After the Jacks are dropped, only a higher hand can drop another Jack if
there is room for a different suit Jack and that person is the only one who can declare the
trumph from the dropped suits. After the declarer picks up the Jack of the declared suit,
others who dropped the Jacks pick up the leftover Jacks (first they have to pick their own if
it is there).

In the version we played, there are అడ్డు, పై అడ్డు, షరతు, పై షరతు, కోటు for
challenges on ఆట. Each challenge doubles the పట్లు with the exception of కోటు,
which not only clears any బాకీ of పట్లు but also wins the slam. Also, కోటు
requires that the team of the person saying కోటు has to collect all the పట్లు, not just
the person alone.

I'm sure there are many more version of this అడ్డాట.

This is an incredibly addicting game. The fun part of it is that there is little room for
betting but the passions run so high to make you glued to the వీధి అరుగు forever! If
anyone remembers, there is a cartoon by బాపు in నండూరి రామమొహనరావు గారి
"విశ్వరూపం" about అడ్డాట. To illustrate the tendency of elements to attract
electrons to complete their outer shell (thereby mimicing the electronic structure of intert
gases for stability), బాపు drew a cartoon with three guys sitting at a table and ask the
passerby "రా గురూ అడ్డాటేసుకుందాం!". I don't know how else we would have spent
the six months of college closure during the Andhra agitation in 1973-74!

Murty garu has given a detailed version of the game - thanks - In East Godavari Dist, we played this game on similar rules in 1950's.during my childhood days  One addition to the rules - అడ్డు   is first challenge to the ' ఆట ' call after the caller declares తురఫు  - then 'పై అడ్డు' - then ' షరతు' - then 'పై షరతు' - then 'బేస్తు' - then 'కుదేలు' - each challenge doubling the 'కలుపులు ' ie 'ఆటలు' value of that round. The higher challenges are recklessly called out when emotions run high !! Haa! Haa! with even gestures and comments like, 'నీ  పని  చెప్తాను  ఆగరా ' etc. When emotions run high, the slang used by player against the other is - if the shuffling side is not able to get their 'కలుపులు ' reduced with enough wins and going on and on with shuffling duty, the opponents tease them with comments like ''తోమరా ! తోము! చేతులు నెప్పి పెడుతున్నాయా? పరవాలేదులే నా దగ్గర అమృతాంజనం వుంది లే ' ' etc etc - (Shuffling is here equated with అంట్లు తోమడం (cleaning vessels) in the kitchen.) Haa! Haa! There was lot post mortem analysis of each game + lot of laughter in the family when Addaata is played during festival / school holidays. It was a sort of addiction also , but then it is much better than today's TV addiction or Cell Phone addiction and more extrovertive as you interact with others in this game instead of sitting like a moron in front of a TV set or with cell phone in hand and become introvertive these days.  'జాకీ సలాం' by the side which reached 47 కలుపులు first is practiced by us also. and after the session which ended with జాకీ సలాం, every one used to ask 'ఇవ్వాళ జాకీ సలాం అయ్యిందా ?'  and search the persons head for 'బొప్పిలు '  etc etc ! Such fun !! I think, it is in that mood only 'Unlucky in Cards and lucky in love' saying emerged to make the losers feel happy inplace of negative feelings.

జాకీ, మణేల, ఆసు, రాజు, మదాం, త్రీంచా - these names are the ones we used in East Godavari Dist also in Addaata.
కోటు overrules the trump caller's bid, but కోటు has to be announced after the trump caller announces his trump suit, and before trump caller plays his first card.-  కోటు caller has to announce his own trump before he starts playing his first card (the reason probably is .that కోటు  being a tough call, possibilities are evaluated with an assumption of what cards the trump caller probably is carrying (at least  Jackie of his trump could be with him - type guesses).

We mostly played this game with 4 players and one pack. We tried 2 packs with 6 players and found it to be too intriguing.

Is there an online version of addata, which can be played remotely? Comes in handy when people are practising social distancing.

Please see above  the way it is played in East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh. One important feature I forgot to add - In Addata the Pattu (Trick) can be won by cutting with a trump, even when the player is carrying a card in the played suit. This feature makes the game even more 'cut-throat' and challenging.
