A camera in a laptop, tablet, smartphone or desktop computer monitor that has the lens facing the user on the same side as the screen. Also called a "selfie camera" in a mobile device or a "Webcam" in a laptop, a front-facing camera is required to make video calls. Contrast with rear-facing camera. See Webcam, selfie and video calling.

I have compared the standard EXIF data from a picture taken with a mobile phone's rear camera and another taken with the same phone's front camera. The same fields appear in both files and no big difference jump out.

There is a possibility that your phone case may be interfering with the front camera. If you have installed a case on your phone and your front camera is not working, then you should check the case. If the case is too tight, it could interfere with the camera and the buttons that are equipped to take photos. Check for tiny cracks or imperfections on the casing that might mess up your camera and replace it with a better case.

I just replaced the battery in an iPhone 6 Plus. I made the rookie mistake of ripping the flex cable going to the front camera and earpiece. I had NOT removed the display and instead just worked with the phone carefully propped up and rubber-banded to something weighted. That one flex cable is way more fragile than I expected.

With millions of selfies uploaded to the internet every day, the humble selfie camera is putting in some serious work. It's little surprise that manufacturers are pouring lots of money into making your selfie-snapping as easy and enjoyable as possible, while trying not to sacrifice the design of the phone itself.

Although it didn't know it at the time, Sony played a major role in the inception of the selfie. In 2004, Sony Ericsson released the Z1010, one of the first commercial mobile phones with a front facing camera.

However, it wasn't intended for taking snaps of yourself, but for video conferencing. The 0.3MP camera might not turn heads now, but at the time, it was quite a talking-point. As the brand's first 3G phone, with a mighty 32MB of storage and 2.2-inch color screen, it was a status symbol.

It took Apple another six years to add a front-facing camera, which arrived with the iPhone 4 in 2010. At the time, Steve Jobs applauded it as the realization of the Star Trek-esque future he had always dreamed of as a child. We must have missed the episode where Spock uploaded 50 duck face snaps to Instagram. Maybe that was in Voyager?

With the trend towards slimmer phones, the bezel, that frame around the screen, has been slowly shrinking. That's a problem, as it's a handy place to stick the camera, tucked out of the way, yet still accessible.

But wait, though. Because Huawei, which is also pushing the notch on its newer phones, claimed in an interview with Forbes that it was responsible for the design, three to four years before the iPhone X:

The notch is one way around the issue of what to do with the selfie camera, and the hole is another (although really, lets face it, the hole is simply a small notch). There have been some other pretty innovative solutions, too.

On both phones, the camera actually pops up from the top of the phone, takes a snap, and then tucks itself back into the housing for safety. It's a somewhat Rube Goldberg approach to design, but we can't knock it for innovation.

One things for sure, the front-facing camera isn't going anywhere. According to Samsung's research, the average person will take 25,000 selfies in their lifetime. It's fair to say we're addicted to the selfie, to a fault.

One answer might come in scrapping the front camera altogether. Before you start breaking down into tears at the impact this could have on your Instagram, don't despair. Some companies are experimenting with putting a second screen on the back of the phone, like the Meizu Pro 7.

On this phone, a small 1.9-inch screen sits just below the back camera. This means you can line up your shots accurately, as well as take video calls and do everything else you could with a front facing camera.

However, scrapping the front camera would mean an end to the Bothie, a photo of you and your best pal taken at the same time with the front and rear facing cameras. Maybe that's not such a great loss.

While it's currently a fan of the notch, Huawei appears to have its sights set on the hole approach. Leaked images show the Huawei Nova 4 with a hole in the top left of the display for the camera. Unlike the holes in the original Essential and Sharp phones, Huawei has managed to achieve a floating spot for the camera to poke through. It's entirely surrounded by screen and completely independent of the bezel.

The potential for a future trend of bendy phones, spearheaded by Samsung's recent announcement, could be a whole new approach to tackling the camera, too. It's not too hard to imagine an audience for an adjustable selfie camera that can be poised at any angle.

We can also expect the camera resolution to keep on getting better. We've seen this focus already, on the rear camera. But the stock that most people put into the selfie camera means that there's a demand there for superb image quality.

The Google Pixel 3 XL has just launched, and its advertising made a big deal about the group selfie mode available on the phone. That's unlikely to change, and no matter where the camera is, or what it looks like, our love for the selfie doesn't appear to be fading any time soon.

Everything I try to switch to the front camera, it freezes for a few seconds and then says something about the camera is disabled. I've already tried a reboot and factory reset and a clear data and cache and it still doesn't work. Any suggestions?

As you have tried most everything, I suggest that you check your warranty details and if still valid contact the manufacturer. If you are keen and the warranty period is over, here is a link which shows how to disassemble your phone. It may just be a loose camera connection

The camera ribbon flex cable connection is very close to the camera itself, (2.00 minutes to 2.10 minutes into the video on the link in my answer). You may be able to see if it affects the camera operation at all.

Discovered this problem is the home screen app blocking access to the camera. Change the home screen UI to something Luke Asus Zen UI and the camera begins to work again. I previously tried all the other options this is the only one that works

When im on my messenger it wont show my face or the selfie on my zte blade x wont work just keeps saying unable to connect to camera or disabled due to security policies can someone plz help me out here

I struggled with this for days and nothing worked! I took a picture then the camera flipped itself to selfie mode...but selfie mode didn't even work. None of the menu buttons worked in selfie mode either ..it was just stuck there!

I opened Facebook and decided on a whim to try the Facebook camera. Not only did it work, but it unstuck the camera app!!!! So happy it's fixed, but frustrated I wasted so much time on ineffective "fixes"

Hi @Sriram2, welcome to our community!

I'm sorry to hear about the troubles with the front camera.

Do you get any error message when you switch from the main camera to the front camera? Or is just showing a black screen?

There is a inbuilt test in the phone called Diagnostics, which you can find under Settings > About phone. Here you can test certain functions in your phone such as the front camera. How is the front camera working in this test?

If there is no change when running the Diagnostics test I'd recommend that you clear the data for the camera application in your phone. This will not delete any photos you have taken with your phone or videos that you have recorded, it will only delete the data and cache for the camera application.

Go to Settings > Apps > scroll to the right until you get to the "All" > scroll down and find "Camera" > tap on it and press "Clear data" and confirm with "OK".

Start the camera again and try the front camera, is it working now? If i'ts still not working correctly could you please try and reboot your phone in safe mode? When the phone is rebooted in safe mode all the applications that you have installed on your own will not be loaded, to see if one of them is the cause.

Let me know how it went!
