The VCI-300 and NS7 I can sort of forgive as Itch didn't have FX out of the gate, but on this?
"We've made the perfect Traktor controller but the FX unit has to be bolted on top"
Either build it in to the controller, or don't bother!
subject On January 16, 2012, Pressure Wave said this:Way to go Numark! I'm glad that Traktor is getting the full NS# treatment it deserves. NI definitely have the edge over their competitors due to HID support, but competition improves the breed, so I'm glad to see hardware manufacturers still providing alternatives. I'm not so sure about the looks, but they get points for avoiding the slightly overdone Red/Black combo that's popping up everywhere. The 4Trak will certainly get some looks and grab attention. The Kommand Console looks a little tacked on, but I understand the difficulty of trying to redesign the NS6 to fit all those extra FX controls in the current casing, so points to Numark for coming up with at least a semi-elegant solution.
Another fun thought: How cool would it be to show up in a club with a 4Trak and an NS6 set up, so all you have to do is hook up your laptop and get cracking??? It could be the Controllerist alternative to CDJs.

I'm a bit obsessed with Traktor and the fact the user can map millions of functions to buttons and knobs. This controller certainly doesn't appear to lack in that department (overall control). The proof is in real-life testing and I hope an in depth video review is soon released - Preferably a combined effort with UniqueSquared & DJ Shiftee (for example)
subject On January 16, 2012, blackavenger said this:Well, I see one thing that is sure to please a Traktor user.....correct me if I am wrong, but isn't this the first dedicated controller that gives them a Strip/Needle Search function? I have it on my NS6, and I ABSOLUTELY love the feature. It's just like having a cart w' a record. In fact, up until the CDJ2000s implemented it, I had not even considered straying from Turntables. I wouldn't have gotten into ITCH if the NS6 (which has it) hadn't come along.
As for the bolted on Filters......that is pretty weak. Phatbob is right, the NS7's excuse was that ITCH was devoid of Effects at the point which it was released....an accessory to bolt on after the fact was excusable. But this just reveals the obvious, the 4Trak is an afterthought. An attempt to capture some of the Traktor crowd, albeit in a cheap manner.
I for one am looking forward to the 4Trak MKII....that should be good.
**I was hoping the Numark announcement was a successor to the NS6....one where we got ultra-precise Pitch Resolution & LED monitoring for all 4 channels :/
I knew it prolly wouldn't come til' next year...it was just wishful thinking.

nice scoop!
subject On January 16, 2012, paddypad said this:Wow. This thing is a beast! Looks like Numark boosts out the best they have for 2012 with the 4Trak as the final controller . The layout is well done. Just two things:
- Will it be possible to route external sources into Traktor to use its effects on them, like for example simple line inputs or maybe even on your own voice using mic input.
- How to activate FX Slot 3 and 4 on the channels? This is what I don't understand, cause no controller supports that.
But despite of these things, it really looks like this thing will support ultra-low latency for the jogwheels.
Cool thing that one can also skip to the beginning of the track with a single button. This is mine

FX Controls for fx-units 3 & 4
Cuebuttons for cuepoints 6-8
Cuebuttons for sampleslots 1-4 x 2
The paintjob...wtf? Please make on in black with blue/orange!! Pretty please!
Just as with the S4 in order to truely use all of Traktors awesome features and for me to dive into controllerism heaven I once again have to bring along/purchase a second controller along side this beast! Why oh why? :(
subject On January 16, 2012, frequency.m said this:I wish the filter knows were part of the mixer section (like they are on the reloop) instead of above. Are there controls dedicated to effect selection or are you stuck doing this on the laptop? A lot of these controllers don't seem to have controls dedicated to picking your effects. Traktor 2 can also have 4 effects now; with all this real estate I'd liked to have seen dedicated controls for all 4.
Based on the marketing blurb I take it this only has 2 channels of external inputs not 4? What I'd really like that nobody seems to do is a controller that acts as a Traktor mixer. Four external inputs so I can bring my own "controllers" (turntables in my case) but have the controller be the mixer and have hardware buttons for effects, loops, loop recorder, etc. I could certainly live with transport controls on the controller as long as I can ignore them and hook up 4 external timecode controllers of my choice. The first company to do that with a quality controller gets my money.
subject On January 16, 2012, Buddha said this:Having a hard time understanding why the fx section isn't built into the controller. Seems like they are trying to market it as a "bonus". I can't really see the benefit in having an extra part to break/lose/go wrong.
Other than that looks good. Pricing would have to be sub-s4 territory. DVS integration is a deal breakers for me too. Can't imagine this will have it tho.
subject On January 16, 2012, Digital Boy said this:Why not just get an S4 for less? This doesn't even look like it has sample control.
subject On January 16, 2012, filespnr said this:@frequency.m good call on the FX not being with the mixer
@Numark Start giving more thought to how people actually want to play, and realize that the beauty of controllers is the ability to do multiple things at once. This is a sick controller, but it's too big, too spread out, and the button/knobs aren't group to allow innovative styles. Basically, it will only allow you to re-produce Turntable styles.
subject On January 16, 2012, Gizmo said this:I suspect that the reason why the FX controller is an add-on is cost. To rework the top of the NS6 would require expensive additional tooling, rather than some new smaller tooling for the add-on. I like it there, but not everyone will.
subject On January 16, 2012, Toast said this:Clearly they are fully aware that at 1099 they aren't gonna take away much sales from the S4. Also i'd rather the VCI-400 at 999 if i'm gonna spend the bucks.
@filespnr is right. Like the NS6 this is catered to the turntablist in you although Traktor's jog wheel settings aren't as food as Itch so it will be difficult to cut like you do in there.
The efx section isn't bad. i dig it. i just wish the filters were in the mixer section.
Can't blame them for not fully redesigning. tooling of this size would cost anywhere from 50-100k or even more depending on where it's getting done. Expensive stuff.
subject On January 16, 2012, LeiChat said this:Looks cool but was it conceived and designed before Traktor 2 ?
Where's the buttons for Loop Decks ?
subject On January 16, 2012, Gizmo said this:I wouldn't say turntablist, unless you're referring to a DJ who prefers a more traditional turntable experience - something larger rather than a compact controller.
The VCI-400 has a lot going for it, including better than average Traktor performance. I was relieved when I fired up my unit with Traktor - It's always a tense moment to see how the jog wheel feels. It's not Traktor's strong point unless it's with NI's own hardware, or units developed in conduction with NI.
subject On January 16, 2012, Louie V said this:Ive been waiting for numark to release a native traktor controller since the day the NS7 launched, but now, after seeing this one i kinda wished they didn't.
Right off the bat, it looks awful, its laid out for itch, not for traktor, but they think just because they throw on a bar at the top with some extra buttons and knobs, that its optimized for Traktor. Numark has really disappointed me on this one, and trust me, while I'm probably not their best customers, I'm definitely one of their most loyal.
A buddy of mine at numark told me about this thing a year ago, it was supposed to look like a tron version of the ns6 with the blue n green led's (this was at the time of release of the ns6). BULL CRAP! this don't look appealing at all (trust me i loved the NS6) but this just looks like the unloved step child over at numark.
for the last few years numark has done a great job with their products, The Mixdeck was a huge hit, the NS6 was pure awesome, they actually made new mixers for a chance (instead of rehashing their old mixers with new model numbers and diff color schemes). now numark is falling back into that hole they were in for some time. If they need someone with some fresh ideas they can feel free to contact me and i'll work for their product development. they've already offered me a job in their marketing dept, via twitter.

It wouldn't work because Itch controllers are, in a sense, "dongles" for the software. They have to be plugged in for Itch to fully function.
But why not the reverse? Why not allow the NS6 to have access to the 4Trak firmware? If I as an NS6 owner buy a copy of Traktor, why not allow my NS6 to have the high definition jog mapping?
I'd even be willing to buy the "FX Kommand Console" as a way of unlocking a tighter Traktor mapping for the NS6. Numark would still make money, and I would have a somewhat software neutral controller.
Thoughts?

No vu-meters for each channel..
Filters knobs should be in the mixer section
I think the layer of the vci400 is better

I don't care for sample decks and 5 cue points (without shift) works fine for me. I can see why this would be a concern for others though.
I quite like the idea of the filters being up the top - it gives it a bit of an old school club installation feel. I also like the idea of the effects rack being able to angled back towards the user.
The yellow LEDs don't float my boat.
Can someone please tell me what length and resolution the pitchfaders are???

For me one of the best features of Traktor is the recordable sample decks and still only the S4 has hands on controls for that.
This looks like a beast and traktor users who like the Ns6 must be pleased. I'm going to hold my breath to see if this is the unit to make me jump ship to N.I.

On the NS6 when using the itch 2.1 software and the newest NS6 firmware you can see the use the vu meters to see the gain on each channel by holding down the required channels headphone cue button for a second or two. The vu meter will then switch from master to show the selected channels gain until you release the button. This feature will probably make it into the 4Trak too. Its a compromise i know.
