What happens if you type "dmesg"? Is the device/card recognized by the
kernel, if so it might give you some clues where to look further.

Have you tried to search on Sun's web pages for Solaris support on various
hardware devices?

The outcome of the dmesg did not say anything to me (see attachement). I
could not find anything from the Solaris webpage either. The only
information I have without opening the computer is the name stated below and
that it is a 10/100 PCI NIC Card.
So I guess I should look for a drive like I had for NE2000 card (nei.conf
and nei.bef) but the question is what should it be???

I FreeBSD 4.4 finns det en device driver som heter rl den skall
fungera för ditt kort.
Det kanske kan ge dig ledtrådar var du kan söka vidare.
Se nedan.

bash-2.05a$ man rl
RL(4) FreeBSD Kernel Interfaces Manual RL(4)

NAME
rl - RealTek 8129/8139 fast ethernet device driver

SYNOPSIS
device rl

DESCRIPTION
The rl driver provides support for PCI ethernet adapters and embedded
controllers based on the RealTek 8129 and 8139 fast ethernet controller
chips. This includes the Allied Telesyn AT2550, Farallon NetLINE 10/100
PCI, Genius GF100TXR, NDC Communications NE100TX-E, OvisLink LEF-8129TX,
OvisLink LEF-8139TX, Netronix Inc. EA-1210 NetEther 10/100, KTX-9130TX
10/100 Fast Ethernet, Encore ENL832-TX 10/100 M PCI, Longshine
LCS-8038TX-R, the SMC EZ Card 10/100 PCI 1211-TX, and various other cheap
adapters. It also supports the Accton EN1207D which has a chip labeled
MPX5030 (or MPX5038) which appears to be a RealTek workalike.

The RealTek controllers use bus master DMA but do not use a descriptor-
based data transfer mechanism. The receiver uses a single fixed size
ring buffer from which packets must be copied into mbufs. For transmis-
sion, there are only four outbound packet address registers which require
all outgoing packets to be stored as contiguous buffers. Furthermore,
outbound packet buffers must be longword aligned or else transmission
will fail.

The 8129 differs from the 8139 in that the 8139 has an internal PHY which
is controlled through special direct access registers whereas the 8129
uses an external PHY via an MII bus. The 8139 supports both 10 and
100Mbps speeds in either full or half duplex. The 8129 can support the
same speeds and modes given an appropriate PHY chip.

Does this means I have to install the FreeBSD to get this to work?
That would also mean a new kernel archicture and some commands won't be the
same?

Is it possible to get the driver (source code) from you and see if it can be
merged into Solaris 8 kernel?

I have looked around on the web and only see people seeking this driver.
Nothing could be found on freebsd sight about RL

No, it just helps you find what you might be looking after...

I thought that if you could find a driver for Slowlaris 8 for the following
cards (as listed below):

It could work for you! Literally it's up to you. I just wanted to give you
some references. Should there be difficulties finding a driver, you have
three alternatives:

1.) Run Solaris without a network interface
2.) Replace the network card with something supported by Solaris.
3.) Install a OS that supports your HW.

BTW: Solaris is not known to support alot of hardware. If you wanna go
opensource try Linux or *BSD. I think it would ease many things for you,
like getting support from the communities e.g. usenet.

Magnus

All supported devices can be found here:

http://soldc.sun.com/support/drivers/hcl/8/1001/p6.html

I've done a quick look through it, and your card does not seem to be
included though.

Hello!

I have the same configuration as you (Solaris 8, Accton
EN1207D)...

The chip on the board is a Realtek8139. So you should get
the driver from
Realtek!

Surf to http://www.realtek.com.tw/ and follow the links
"Download",
"Communications Network ICs" and select RTL8139(A/B ...) on
the
menu for "Fast Ethernet NIC". Then push the button "Go" and
you're
directed to a page there you can find a driver for Solaris
8.

The name of the file to download is "rtls103.zip".

Good luck!

Many thanks. Did not mind looking here as last time (3 weeks ago) when I had
a Realtek card there was no Solaris driver for RLT8129 so I got it from
Solaris 7 cd instead.
Anyway now it should be up in no time.
