The much-talked-about tax on mobile phone SIM card was brought down
to Tk 900 from Tk 1,200, proposed during the placing of the budget on
June 9.
Saifur also defended his budgetary measure for imposing tax on mobile
phone SIM cards, saying the mobile phone companies had been
exploiting the `gold mine of 40 million able consumers' in
Bangladesh. `As they are making money, they must give something to
the government's exchequer.'
The bill was placed immediately after placing of the new budget on
June 9.
Earlier, Kader Siddiqui of the Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Janata
League and Golam Habib Dulal of the Jatiya Party were given the floor
to speak on their objection to a few clauses of the bill. They also
called for sending the bill for `public opinion' before its passage.
