Which telescope have you got? The unmistakably bright object to the
south-west in the evening sky at the moment is giant planet Jupiter.
Your telescope should show its disk, hopefully with cloud belts, and
up to four star-like moons stretched out to either side. A good tip is
not to use too powerful an eyepiece straight away. Start low and then
try higher magnification if conditions allow.

Can't give you more than a few pointers, but the main ones are:

* Start in daylight by finding a land-based object in the main telescope and aligning the finder telescope to the same object using the adjusting screws on the finder

*Don't bother with higher magnifications (smaller eyepiece numbers) until you have got to grips with using the instrument. The higher magnifications become increasingly difficult to use as the power increases, as the field of view is smaller and the image is dimmer

* Learn a few constellations at a time and find the objects in each one. The site which I do for the Society for Popular Astronomy's Young Stargazers is suitable for all beginners.

* Don't expect too much! The vivid colours that you see in books are the result of long-exposure photos and just can't be seen by eye.

Hope this helps,
