Hi all,

I have installed the latest version of "Telephone" and still have a
problem with outgoing calls.
I connect my MacBook with the local Fritz Box as IP phone - everything
fine, incoming calls work fine - but if I dial an outgoing call to any
phone-number I don't hear the caller and he doesn't hear me?!

Did I missed something or is there any work-around?!
Thanks - Timo!

Hi Timo,

I am afraid I have no solution yet, but a similar configuration and the same problem!
I also use the application on a MAC which is connected to a FritzBox.
The problem is the same: Incoming calls are OK. But with outgoing calls, I have no sound on my MAC.

I did some investigation with wireshark.
The problem is obviously a codec issue.

With incoming calls, the SIP-Invite packet from the FritzBox to the MAC contains a SDP-part which lists the available codecs, the Fritz Box would like to use.
The MAC, respectively the phone application answers with TRYING, RINGING and some SIP stuff like that, and finally with a SIP/OK inclusive the SDP.
There it chose the G711 codec to be used on this session - and it works just fine.

But in the other direction, the phone application on the MAC sends Invite with the list of available Codecs to the Fritz Box.
And along some other codecs, the list contains also G722. The Fritz Box chose G722 as their favorite Codec and the session connects with G722.

But obvioausly, the phone app has some problems using G722. I don't know if G722 is supported by this app at all???

A workaround could be, to tell the Fritz Box that it has to use G711 only. But I don't know if this is possible. I didn't find a appropriate setting...

Joachim

The problem also seems to occur in the Nimbuzz and X-Lite VoIP apps for me, oddly - X-Lite was configured exactly according to the VoIP provider PennyTel's instructions!

I got in touch with the guy, who developed the Telephone application. Because from my point of view it's still an issue with the G722 Codec. I asked him, if it is possible to configure the application in a way that it won't use G722 at all and use G711 instead. But unfortunately the answer was, that the Codec choice is something hard codec in the app and not configurable.
It's really sad, because I like the Telephone".
But if you run the app "against" a SIP registrar which also prefers G722 (and is also not configurable), there are just two "solutions":

1) Fix the problem with G722 in the telephone app
or
2) Make the App configurable concerning the codecs that are allowed to use.

BTW: I double checked the issue with another SIP softphone, which is configurable. The results was: As long as you configure just G711, everything works fine!

hi I had the same problem. It might not work for you  but I fixed it by:
  1. uninstalling all softphone SIM applications (including telephone app)
  2. removing all my preferences: go to username/Library/Preferences in terminal app then typing rm -fr *.* (make sure you are in the right directory first by typing pwd otherwise you could wipe your system)
  3. restarting your mac and holding down the Command-Option-P-R keys at the same time just before restart
  4. reinstalling telephone app and adding account details.
  5. test by dialing 600 (echo test)

Thanks Tom!

Your tips worked for me as well for the same problem (no sound heard on outgoing calls), except I only had to uninstall Telephone (not all SIP apps), remove only Telephone prefs (not all Prefs), and did not need the Command-Option-P-R step

i.e., I only did this:

1. Uninstall Telephone (drag to Trash, or press Cmd+Backspace after selecting it)
2. Go to Terminal:
cd ~/Library/Preferences
rm -rf com.tlphn.Telephone.plist*
3. Reinstall Telephone (and add all SIP details again)

and it worked great. Thanks!
