Hi,

Telephone 1.2 is out! It fixes the long-awaited reconnect-after-sleep problem, improves transfer, adds the high-quality Opus codec and Spotify pausing.

Telephone has always been free and open source, and I’d love to work on it full time, constantly improving it for you. With this release I’m trying an optional patronage model. It is implemented as an auto-renewing in-app subscription with two options: monthly for $0.99 and yearly for $10.99 (or local App Store equivalents). The subscription can be cancelled up to one day before its renewal, based on the normal App Store rules. There’s also a button in the app to open Apple’s subscription management screen for easier cancellation.

This is a way to directly and voluntarily support the ongoing app development. I understand that not everybody would want or be able to do that and not everybody likes subscriptions. But Telephone is a one-man project, and if there is enough people to support it, I’d be glad to continue providing a free app with all features available to the public.

Thank you,

Alexey

PS. If you missed the support window on first launch after update, you can access it in the main menu: Telephone > Support Telephone...

Fantastic! Upgrading and donating (even though Apple's 30% cut is ridiculous). :-)

Hi Alexey,

thank you very much for writing Telephone.app. Since it helps me a lot, I'd like to donate.

Unfortunately there seems to be something wrong with the the in-app purchase. While my Apple account confirms the purchase, Telephone.app doesn't. It says something like "purchase incomplete" and "electronic receipt invalid" (see my German screenshot attachments). Restoring purchases by clicking "Käufe wiederherstellen" doesn't work either.

Can you please take care of it?

Thank you
André

Thank you! At least with the new App Store subscription rules it becomes 15 % after one year.

Hello André,

Thank you for supporting the project!

As you correctly noticed, this is a local error in validating and displaying the purchase. if you received a confirmation from Apple, the purchase itself actually succeeded.

I could already find the problem. Sometimes macOS doesn’t update the receipt with the current version after making a purchase or after updating the app. Currently I’m looking for a solution for that.

What seems to be helping for now is app reinstallation. Just move the current app to the trash and and install it again from the App Store. Your settings will not be affected because they are stored separately in a standard location. When installing the app fresh, the app should get the latest receipt and you should be able to see a thank-you message, a subscription expiration date, and a button to manage subscriptions when you open Telephone > Support Telephone… in the main menu.

Hello Alexey,

replacing the app helped.

Thanks again!

Just for the record: The same happens after an update of Telephone.app (via the App Store). You need to delete and reinstall Telephone.app again to regain your in-app purchase.

Hello André,

Thank you for the information. Yes, unfortunately the latest macOS 10.12 isn’t very good at refreshing the app receipt. This mechanism is crucial for detecting the in-app purchase. Sometimes there is a period of time when the subscription is renewed on the Apple’s server, but macOS doesn’t get this latest state locally. As a result, Telephone doesn’t see it as well.

One of the solutions to make this happen less often is to switch from the monthly to the yearly patronage. You can do this in Apple’s subscription management UI after clicking “Manage Subscriptions...” in Telephone patronage window. Or opening it manually as described here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202039. The yearly subscription has a small discount.

As an alternative to manually deleting the app you can also press Shift-Command-R when the patronage window is active. You’ll see a dialog to quit the app which will enforce the receipt refresh by the OS.

There’s no way to really fix this and I’ve already filed a bug report at Apple. I’m still looking for a solution to overcome the problem. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Alexey
