Someone asked me about the advertising budget of Mobilink, Ufone and
Telenor for the year 2005, 2006 and 2007. I have no clue but if
someone else has an idea (order of magnitude is fine), please share.

Using 30m total subscribers (against the announced 60m to account for dual SIM holding) in Pakistan and an ARPU of $4, 5% of the total revenue of all operators comes out to be 4.3 billion (per year) as the total possible marketing budget of all the major operators collectively. Their individual share within this would wary according to their strategies. I wish someone can quote some real figures to correct this simplistic set of assumption.

4.3 billion per annum! How modest is that. :-)

But it seems totally realistic considering the amount of TV, Billboards, Newspapers and Radio advertising we have of these operators and how could we forget those specially designed marketing videos and their airing costs.

I heard that there is some fixed amount 'to-be-spent' by these operators as per PTA regulations on R&D, is that true? Do we have any figure how much (in percent) is spent by these organization on R&D? Because otherwise it just seems like a rat's race for the nation. We give them revenue, they use it for more users (revenue) and then again this goes on. Obviously, this model has exponentially increased our tele-density and connectivity options for end-user but why not start thinking about creating local technology now or lending some money to universities to setup some QUALITY and DISCIPLINED research centers?
