I am sorry for my ignorance but I fail to understand the relation of MNP with terrorism.

Every portin/portout is accompanied by considerable information
verification. In fact, it would not be improper to say that all MNP
portins/portouts are the most accurate records bearing connections
because the data now exists at two points instead of just one.

It is indeed a lame excuse by the government to disrupt the MNP regime
which has helped keep operators on their toes to keep the customers
happy.

One by one, we are deconstructing all the goods that the telecom
sector has seen in the past 10 years.

Just to add my thoughts:

Rehman Malik is Back with his Tech Blunders: Bans MNP, available here:

Probably the (larger) mobile companies have convinced Rehman Malik that MNP helps terrorists.

We have all seen the hurdles put in the way of porting a number, surely a number blocked  for suspicious activities can be stopped from being ported.

The CELL companies are culprit in response to data REQUEST which they play like Tennis ball between the Original number issuer & the In_taker.

While the Call forwarding & Call landing under malicious Trunking is another issue in this respect.

ISAT phone from Inmarsat a portable satellite phone have an built-in feature to ALLOW or BLOCK out going call. When blocked call lands In Pakistan via random GSM provider, In UAE via BATEL (Bahrain telecom)GSM number, in KSA via ETISALAT, in EGYPT via VODAFONE, where as when it is ALLOWED the Inmarsat number appears on display.

Unless the Inmarsat SIMM is issued under special arrangement with pre-blocked number available to defense & law enforcement authorities phone unit have the user option to allow or block the outgoing number.

Our immediate neighbor India - the number portability is allowed only after data is exchanged & verified by their coordinating Home office, without disrupting service to the end user.  While the world know India stepped into Cyber space & Cell phone ERA after Pakistan. India have studied closely the pros & cons faced by Pakistan Internet & GSM providers and put in place the technology for LEA (law enforcement agencies) ahead of service availability to common people.

The article you have mentioned is true & correct in the spirit of LAW, MNP shall be banned with immediate affect for non verified numbers.

GSM companies have to come up (highly unlikely) with certain Protocol for MNP data availability to GOVT in less then 60 minutes time upon request.

However GSM companies are playing GOD father & as corporate mafia when it comes to helping Govt. Only because some of the KEY people among law-making benches are on payroll & their children are on 'Scholarships' abroad from such few companies.

Unless Cell companies choose to HELP in true spirit instead of HOLDING on number of customers, The MNP service shall be revoked without any prejudice.

The content of your email is very cryptic .. can you please explain where is the loophold in MNP system ?

Last time I tried MNP (couple of months ago - although an unsuccessful attempt due to crappy logics by Mobilink but another story), it had very much extended checks in place such as sending SMS verification infront of the staff, CNIC verification, copies etc....

thanks,
Shakeel

Just another non-sense from the minister.

We have had previous instances earlier this year on concerns over multiple SIMs and False IMEI (http://telecompk.net/2011/04/21/concerns-over-multiple-sims-and-false-imei-devices/). This had some good recommendations but nothing happened.

Hopefully, on MNP also this is just another committee...

Absolutely baffling. It seems as if he has nothing better to do these days. How about banning Chinese handsets with false or no IMEI's first to curb the terrorist threat?

Let's pray somebody can drill sense into this guy and he is able to focus on his own job.

The reasons cited here are equally ludicrous. "people are transferring blocked sims".

Doesnt blocked mean "frozen"? or just sims that cant make or receive calls?

If the term block allows transfer of numbers between operators, than its not really blocked its it?

Why should customers take the brunt of inefficiencies at operator or regulator end?

This BS has to end.

Agreed. Someone pls. tell the minister that phones with fake/no IMEI are a bigger threat to national security.

Majority of the MNP sims are by the operators itself to achieve their MNP targets and show fake figures also...

Ouch, Maybe we need to reach out to the minister and talk to him ?

and explain to him how it works ?

Unless we educate him, the people around him will, and they do not understand telecom, the people in this group do.

I would suggest that tm and fawad should personally contact him and give a small 2 pager report on how this can be stoped.

I can help write the 2 pager

This is his fb profile.
