A few days back I had asked on this mailing list if anyone within the telecom system was working towards establishing an SMS gateway to help monitor and coordiante the relief efforts with the various NGO's working in that region.  Having gotten no significant response I went about creating a local setup which at the moment is relatively fucntional but on repearted tests we felt that the only way to create a robust system would be to actually work with the telecom sector from wihtin and not merely as an end-subscriber.

I had acquired a Zong number - and was wondering if someone from Zong [or any other telecom group] would like to help set us put this project up for a noble cause - the effort actually entails a coordination center for various NGO's while at the same time it will function as an alert system in crisis for any disasters that we might [god forbid] face in the future all this comes with a heavy inclination to a citizen journalism idea via SMS's

Long story short - Im looking for someone either from Zong or any other telecom group willing to listen to us and get us running - not only for now but a noble cause for the future - this is a complete out of the pocket, non-commercial, non-profit initiative.

The ideas seem quite like the SeeNReport and Chopaal projects. Chopaal was created out of the need in times of relief efforts after the deadly earthquakes that hit several areas in Pakistan a few years ago.
Perhaps you could leverage on their expertise at NEWT Lab in LUMS.

You may check FrontlineSMS It's a free, large-scale text messaging
solution for NGO's. People have been using it for various relief or
social purposes across the globe.

mobiz SMS is also a robust SMS solution but our network partners offer
a different SLA and have a price on SMS traffic. So, if you may get a
connectivity from some operator, we may offer you to use our software
and technical support for this noble service.

Awab,

We have already setup an IDP tag on chOpaal. It's accessible at
www.chopaal.pk/IDP and over SMS (send "join IDP" to 0332-4672255).
Everyone can send messages to the tag and they're approved by the
moderator to filter spam.

The NGOs and other organizations in the field can create groups
instantly over SMS by sending "create groupname" to 0332-4672255.
Sending "create groupname private" would make it a closed group
requiring you to approve join requests.

Also, we just integrated our SMS Gateway with Zong so we've done away
with the issue of delayed message delivery. Currently we're sending
more than 500 messages a minute.

We have also put up advertisements on chOpaal for all major relief
agencies with their contact information. If you wish to put up more
stuff, let me know.
