Mobilink Infinity - The next step in communications

We have launched our broadband services in Karachi on July 1 with the name of  Mobilink Infinity.

This is a big day in the history of Mobilink – a step into providing cutting edge broadband services for our customers and enabling the next cycle of growth and opportunities for Mobilink.  In a country with 165 million people, 12 million already access the internet and only 128 thousand have access to broadband. Our aim is to make this an affordable and accessible service for the masses as we have done with GSM.

This is a soft launch and limited to Karachi.  We are giving a very special pre-launch discount to these customers (see customer invitation and pre-launch offer letters).

Thanks Uzair. So we finally have the much awaited Mobilink Wimax with us in Karachi. Does it support voip other than that built in for Mobilink? It would be fun to see how the cellular giant tackles the net neutrality issue by allowing or denying SIP on its network. The Unlimited 1 meg bandwidth for Rs 1,200 per month is aggressively priced.

Any now only if we can know what number to call to confirm availability of service and order a unit?

Great to see Mobilink also jumping on WiMax bandwagon, it is going to really provide life line for much demanding infrastructure where PTCL's big belly bosses have decided to make life harder for EU. What are Mobilinks plans to expand the service?

Great going ! However just curious to know that after paying 6,000
discounted CPE price will it become the customers property or still
remains the Mobilink property?. Secondly is this service for the whole
Karachi or limited areas . Unlimited downloading is really great and
mobilink to mobilink free calls is another VAS . However initial funds
seem to be quite fatty ; it could be like splitting initial 6,000 into
3 months rentals. My last query is will this service be available from
the customer service centers or franchises as well.

Good luck !

Voice is Free for Infinity to GSM and GSM to infinity in the launch offer till specified period.
Both options available for wified and non wi fied cpes at the moment ..... as the interface out is ethernet you can connect your own distribution device. Major towns in karachi are covered with Outdoor + indoor coverage. last quarter 08 95% plus indoor coverage with Wave 2 and MIMO is planned.

will keep the list posted ...

Wow! 1Mbps in 1200 bucks and wifi-enabled CPEs are the real attraction. I wish I could've waited bit more by not buying a wifi router for my home use few weeks ago.

Btw, the CPE-ownership issue is indigestible - why pay non-refundable 6K when i will have to return it at the termination of service? This is the same questions that I fired on wateen guys as well.

Anyways, good going Uzair & Haris bhai!!

CPE ownership will be of customer , this cpe is already subsidized by operator as you can very well understand that NO CPE (with proper IOT etc ) is available in the market for 100 USD for wimax ( so 6000 is very attractive ). However user might be required to sign a subscription period etc ...

Another point that I think needs to be raised is that the bandwidth is going be "Shared" and when I asked the customer service banda about it, he replied, "It depends upon the situation" .. no clue what that meant what so ever .. he also said that you will be sharing ur bandwith with at least 2 ppl .. this factor will definately play an important role in the overall quality of service ..

I used the Mobilink service in the testing phase, but it was limited to 128kbps, so did not use it much, except to establish, that unlike Wateen it actually works.

The Wateen Wimax however was lightening fast in it's trial period - syuper low latency. The Mobilink Wimax was fast, but similar to how 128kbps regular dsl or cable works.

But compared to a 1 mbps (now 2mbps) maxcom DSL line it was just too slow to use.

I have always seen Telecom as one of the main liberalizer for our country, if we did not have
internet and cheap telecom, we would be even further more back in the last century.

That is why I was shouting so much about the raise in price on the APC price hike.

Telecom are the new freeway's of the world, and with petrol price going to 200$ a barrel, we
should use telecommuting as much as we can, as that will probabbly be the way for going to
work in the not very far future.

Let us all try to keep the prices as much down as we can, and keep the competetion alive
and healthy and strong, as that is what will drive the prices down and quality up.

Thank you to Orascom, Warid Group and Etisalat for investing in Pakistan and we welcome
others also to come to Pakistan, Make a LOT of money and in return give our country the
liberty that it diserved a long time a go.

Also i am missing the news in mainstream (print + electronic) media...and Mobilink was in this much hurry that they didn't come with any website even on the (soft) launch day?

Any thoughts?

When Wateen started up, I got this call from Lahore. The guy had 50 (FIFTY!)
CPEs and wanted to know if there was a way to profit from it. Wanted to
terminate and/or originate traffic. He was very open about stealing and
wanting to operate illegally.

At that time, there was no need, but today, PTA has created a market place in Pakistan to
create an enterprenuer in every single house hold.

cost is 1 cent, selling price is 10 cent, per min,

Do illegal voice for 7 cent a min with 6 cent profit a min, multiply it with only 6 hrs a day that
is 360 mins a day, that is 21$ a day or 648$ a month profit from one device.

Go and sell your route to www.route5060.com

The stop gap measure to formal launch is there to get these catches aside and hit a straight 6er in the market. I'm not sure but this might be to avoid the conventional journey of mobilink to maybelink and bring a refined product into the market later by picking up details from the proving ground. I like the name Infinity so good marketing paraphernalia there instead of just calling mobilink wimax, basically guaranteeing the consumer recall from this move. Now the wimax machinery perspective, its far from the stage to put remarks on Mobilink vs. Wateen performance. Let's wait and see the consumer tolerance level for this product to take the roll.

This organized launch by having a complete roadmap and phases for WiMAX in Pakistan certainly deserves a pat on the back for Mobilink WiMAX team out there.

Great Going!

Huawei to deploy WiMAX network for Mobilink in Pakistan

Thursday 3 July 2008 | 10:03 AM CET

Chinese telecommunications firm Huawei Technologies has been selected by Pakistani mobile operator Mobilink to deploy a commercial WiMAX 16e network. The network will cover central business districts and hot spots in Pakistan's six major cities of Islamabad, Karachi, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Lahore and Rawalpindi. Under the terms of the contract, Huawei will provide Mobilink with a WiMAX system including distributed base stations, an access service network-gateway and a network management system. Huawei's mobile WiMAX systems combine 4G technologies with multi-modal platforms to provide Mobilink with high-quality network coverage. It integrates Mobilink's existing 2G networks with high-bandwidth capacity networks. Huawei's WiMAX system is expected to help Mobilink to meet Pakistan's increasing broadband needs.

The Mobilink Infinity might give the WiMax industry of pakistan a
boost which is still at stake,we are still not sure whether WiMax can
survive the Pakistan Market or not, similar kind of struggle which 3G
faced in UK & Europe.

What I beleive that the recurring rates are awesome but the problem is
with CPE ,Installation charges & other deposits which consumer is not
willing to pay ,specially when broadband is easily available with no
additional charges. They have to reduce these additional charges in
order to grow themselves as well as WiMax market of Pakistan.

The best thing which I found is free calling to Mobilink GSM (time
being).......nice attraction for 3M Mobilink Family.

A nice trick normally used by providers is to offer free CPE with long term contracts. That way initial cost might be higher but due to more subscriber base, overall it is profit. Another model is to rent the CPE to users, user can return CPE when they leave, this works with medium term contacts. However both of these models work when companies have assurance from law enforcement agencies, which is not the case in PK. So I am afraid this is always going to be an issue.

Can someone also test if it has inbound port forwarding? The ones from Wateen didn't and was a serious drawback.

In fact if someone has access to a box, perhaps the group can come up with a series of tests so we can build a profile of both the network and the CPE?

motorolla network is not being launched commercialy (in north and

Zyxel indoor units MAX 200 (3.5)
Zyxel outdoor units MAX 300 (3.5)

Hello,

Thanks for posting info on Mobilink infinity. I subscribed the 512k
package and got it installed last friday. The speed is ok but its been
a pain overall as I have to restart the ZyXel CPE (Customer premises
equipment=Router) about 5 times every day (without exageration). The
support is good (no way near the scary stories of Wateen) and I am
hoping its sorted out within the "1 month money back satisfaction
guarantee" period.

Dear All,

I just subscribed to Mobilink Infinity for 1Mbps connection. The
installers came over and installed it , the over all installation
experience was okay , apart from the fact that they don't provide you
the CPE password , so you cannot do any port mapping / port
forwarding, so had to fight with them to get the access. The
installers told me that its a 256K connection which will be shifted to
1mbps profile by tomorrow , which on repeated requests today was
shifted to 1mbps.

The service in general is pathetic , i dont know if its just me or the
overall user experience , I dont have to reset the CPE like aleem ,
but I get wayy high ping times ( 818ms to google ) and around 14 - 20
% packet loss all the time , My 1mbps wi-max gives me around 10 - 14k
( http://tinyurl.com/5jo2ez ) where my 512kb PTCL dsl downloads fine
from the same machine.

Oh while I am at it , the VoIP service they provide with the Wimax is
pathetic as well , it gets disconnected again and again, the voip
quality sucks and incoming calls rarely work , people tell me they get
number un-reachable even when calling from Mobilink.

By the way , I am a Wateen Wi-max , Worldcall , PTCL DSL & Link.NET
DSL customer and comparing Mobilink's Wimax service with them.

Here are my scores

Installation : 7/10
Service : 0/10 ( it doesn't work! )
Voip : 4/10
Customer Support : 8/10

I hope someone from Mobilink can help me out.

Guys,

This url says it all

http://tinyurl.com/5jo2ez

This is a 1mbps connection ( which was 256k on install, 512k on
yelling , and now 1mbps on threatening ).

Voip doesnt simply works. The only thing that works is their customer
support , which cannot provide you a ticket number to track even.

One suggestion . Stay away from Mobilink Infinity for now atleast!

I was going to apply for the new connection for Mobilink Infinity. Now it should be better for me to wait for more stories about their services :) , as i already received email from their side.

Dear Shariq Raza

We are pleased to inform you that you have been referred by Asad Ali Khan, one of Mobilink Broadband Services' valued customers. We are confident that like the rest of our valued clientele, you will also be satisfied with our services.

Our team will shortly be contacting you for essential documentation. In the meantime, should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us at bbus...@mobilink.net and we will be pleased to assist you.

Looking forward to serve you.

Dear Shariq,

Right now as we are talking , Almost all of Mobilink Wimax network in
Karachi is down ( told by one of the networks team ) and in my area
its been down since 2130hrs. I think you can figure out that QoS is
PoS in Mobilink Infinity's dictionary.

I'll still say , their customer support is excellent!!!

Yes, Eddy is replacing Tore who'd be moving to DTAC (Telenor Thailand) as  CEO. Tore has been one of the most humble human beings to work with at his level.

I have just been told by someone in Mobilink that the VoIP issue has been resolved. Can you please confirm? I have a few friends in Karachi who are interested in getting an Infinity connection but would like to know if *major* issues have been sorted out first.

Here is my 2cents worth:

Called Mobilink Infinity on Monday afternoon roundabout 3:00 PM for a connection. Applied for the 1MB option.

Gentlemen from Mobilink Infinity came 'on-time' on Tuesday morning to our office to complete paperwork. Tuesday evening get a call from them again, verifying the paperwork, etc.

Paperwork took about 20 minutes (as a letter was to be given) and thumb-impression, etc. (I just hated having to walk around the office with a purple thumb!). During verification, Wednesday was suggested 10:30 AM for installation.

Team arrived 30 minutes late, but completed installation and deployment in about 25 minutes (includes internal and external installation and cable run).

Was disappointed by the information they left behind as far as DNS settings, support number, customer ID, etc. was concerned, I felt they should have left behind some handy card-leaflet, that would contain such information. We had (read: hate) to jott this down.

Anyhow, ran through  uploads and downloads all day long to test speeds to our servers in the US.

Out of the 12 or so tests we did for a 10MB compressed file:

Downwload: Almost all the time we got the full download speed
Upload Speed: Max we were able to get was 320Kbps nothing more than this.

Ran through the Speakeasy DSL tests (Choose New York as location)

Max Download: 1Mbps
Max Upload: 384Kbps

Since we were a bit busy today, tomorrow we will do some ping tests, and DNS response tests and will psot the results here. The attached phone that comes with it - is great, so far ('limited time' emphasis supplied) calls to other Infinity numbers is free and any Mobilink cellphone number is free. Phone worked great.

Will do sme Voip runs on it tomorrow. Any recommendations?

Wonderful info, faisal. Silly, that in this day and age they want a thumbprint.

Can you put up a smokeping to some common places, I'd be interested in jitter/packetloss on the pings ..
Also, whats the QOS on the box like? If someone starts downloading, what happens to the voice?
Can you map ports to the inside?

Wasim Cant wait to grab it - configure an asterisk and start running some voice :):):):)

Port forwarding is available on the CPE, NAT has been disabled so now you have public IP end to end. You can prioritize your traffic by putting any additional box in b/w even if the CPE itself doesnt have the capability. there is no major packet loss however jitters could be encountered because the service till now is on best effort.

poor wasim is stuck in lahore, else he'd have a freeswitch up already :) forget disasterisk (unless you need SS7, in which case thats about the only option)

phew, thats good, wateen CPE was useless because of this

understood, harris, thanks for the input, i'd still like to see a map though, especially if there is contention, what happens with 20 boxes up in an apartment building type scenarios, etc

Isn't its getting more easy to use illegal termination ? Simple IPSec connection + SIP based outbound calls via Mobilink/Wateen etc..

I do want add, something I did not mention, that the indoor CPE is Wifi ready! A plus (when compared to the Wateen unit we had). Its a Zyxel modem if that matters. The installers when drilling cleaned up, which was also something worthy to mention.

Wassem dude, I won't be running all those tests you cited, you can come and do that yourself. Will see how Skype works, and skype does show jitter/packet loss, etc.

Hi Wasim,

I have been using it for almost around a week and a half , and atleast
it works now :) well most of the times , Ping times are high , I've
been plotting them to yahoo , google , a couple of my servers in the
US and they generally range from 560 -> 600 ms . Even having the
passwords to the CPEs won't make a difference , as they firewall all
the incoming traffic to your public IP on their edge, As far as VoIP
is concerned , they have QoS built into the CPE , and a little
tweaking with the settings can help you with the issue. Make sure you
get an outdoor unit, indoor coverage is flaky. I'll be sharing the
graphs tomorrow.

The service is okay , considering its 1mbps for 1200rs / month for now
and with low user base , I generally get 100-120kbytes/s on my
downloads and almost around 70kilobytes/sec on my uploads. One issue
that I am still facing is the random disconnection / loss of IP
connectivity , The CPE would remain synced but i'd loose connectivity
towards the internet, and yes , they proxy everything!

Oh yeah , I've been successful in getting the voip working with
freeswitch so yes! I think its pretty good , once they have their
network optimized / stabilized. Its worth spending the money! and no ,
you cannot map ports inside even with the password due to the firewall
blockage.

Regards,
Junaid
