My question is where exactly do they have EDGE support? I remember it
was on in my area - but then, it went back to GPRS.

So the question is - where are the EDGE hotspots?

It would be an amazing deal if there was no cap on the EDGE usage.
Here's what the web page showed:
Standard GPRS charges Rs15+tax/MB
Special rates on Zong Free Rs10+tax/MB
Data will be charges in chunks of 8KB

Unlimited mobile Internet Package

    * Just Rs400+tax and enjoy unlimited internet for the whole month.
    * To activate Zong unlimited internet package call 310 or visit the nearest sales & service center.

Mobilnk already has 500 rs a month unlimited, but it is gprs, if this is edge, I am getting an account for every one in our company.

Mobilink had problems with billing hence they launched flat fee
package for GPRS like Wateen as they wanted to launch BB. I hope CMPak
have a solid &well planned transmission network. This offer looks very
good for GPRS connection.

Warid also has such a package. Unlimited for 500/month. Its only for post
paid subscribers.

A cousin used it on his nokia communicator, as well as plugged his laptop on
it, and has been pretty happy using it in Lahore.

Both are GPRS where as Zong claims EDGE

That is why i even asked this question, I use my laptop with my mobile every where at this
time via mobilink, and it works, but it is gprs.

I want to give every one in our company a unlimited edge connection, and have their dsl
disconnected, so they can then use this with there laptops.

If anyone asks for my opinion, here's what I think would help boost
Zong even further.

Note that these are my opinions, and are not enforced on others. Of
course, the rationale behind them are only known to myself.

1) Their daily charge of Rs. 1 could be eliminated - and that will
help induct more customers, and

2) I know my area has EDGE (I have a k790i, and before Zong's launch,
it was showing that the booster has EDGE on it, which was later
downgraded to GPRS. Why, I don't know, but I know they've done this
intentionally). They should enroll EDGE in all parts of the major
cities - right now, their major competitors are Telenor (nationwide...
that's for certain, since I was going to Taxila, and there was only
one patch without EDGE) and Ufone (major cities, I believe).

3) Update their website and make all the links workable (and
clickable). Seriously, they have no idea what impression they're
leaving (apart from the fact that it's a Chinese company...)

ZONG DID NOT PLAYED LIKE A GIANT IN PAKISTAN

WELL the china mobile company started their operation countrywide in
pakistan on 9th apr 2008 after a very impressive teasing advertising
campaign.
But the initial launch caused the subscribers a lot of hassle to get
their connections, surprisingly the largest cellular company in
universe started with only 1 customer service center in gulshan iqbal
near Baitul mukaram.
i luckily got my sim from a near by shop but it was very difficult to
get the helpline number hooked up.after several tries when i got it
connected i was put to hold for 35 minutes, which fried my ear.
the customer relation officer was in a great hurry to answer your
queries.
I send an email to the zong but after 4 days no reply.I also requested
for unlimited GPRS but couldnt get it activated in 36 hrs.when i got
it look what i got, 3kbps,which always go down every 10 sec.u can
imagine my frustration.this is what they call EDGE?
All this is really unprofessional from CM they claim they have they
have the biggest subscriber net
but they could,nt manage things in Pakistan.
lately when i tried to call for my GPRS activation complain,i was put
to hold for 45 min and then it disconnected, and then there was a
recording that u have made 5 attempts to call zong now u can all again
tomoro.
ZONG wakeup, dont do this to your Pakistani friends.

Ghazanfar,

Its called teething problems, and they were expected. (atleast I did). Its
not possible to have these kinks ironed out on the first day of the launch.
Over time (probably 2-4 months) it'll probably smooth out..

Keep us updated on the performance of your zong chip though!

There is a small difference here and a classic case study in marketing. Zong
came in as an underdog with four companies going full tilt and having
captured most of the market. The team which had the unenviable task of
re-launching a company (Paktel) whose brand had been irreparably been
destroyed by successive owners and the price war had taken away any edge a
new company could have.

Zong is taking up over 60,000 customers a day - I guess most of them churn
and most of this is due to the marketing innovation and I am sure there is
more to come. While I am very critical of the QoS of Mobile companies due to
immature networks and poor optimization, but I guess that is the nature of
the beast. I would cut them some slack for a few months until the network
settles down (remember the many years of Mobilink?)

I guess I have a small degree of interest in this as I was a part of the
team that launched Paktel (very successfully in 1990) and rapidly rolled it
out to many cities over the PAF and Railways network. The interesting part
of this is that the team which is so aggressively launching it is the same:
Zafar Usmani (as the COO - one of the best Marketing professionals in
Pakistan today) and Salman Wassey (now head of head of marketing in Zong -
he changed the face of mobile in Pakistan while he headed Ufone marketing in
2002, by making this a common man's device).

I know how passionate both are about feedback and communicating directly
with their customers - even on an individual level. I would suggest that you
(anyone of you) write to Zafar and be surprised to see the response
(zafar....@paktel.com).

Salman, thanks for providing this interesting bit of information. I am
impressed by the re-branding work. But I think Zong needs to go beyond
the marketing buzz. They have to make sure that their customer service
is top notch. There is really no excuse for launching a website which
does not provide complete information about the services.

In addition, they need to sort out their website (as someone said
earlier, their "coverage" section is literally non-existant with dead
links) and secondly, who has ever heard of only one customer service
centre in Rawalpindi? In Islamabad, they only have one... I believe...
since when did this trend take place?

PS: I think I'll stick with Telenor because 1) their service is good,
2) while the pricing of Zong is somewhat competitive, Telenor's got
other features/add-ons and 3) coverage (which again, CMPak hasn't
mentioned much about) and 4) EDGE is fast (and not 3KB/s).

I would have added more reasons, but I think these are enough for now.

Hi Rehan,

Our Karachi office is situated at Statelife building infront of CM House. We are getting full EDGE coverage here. Moreover ZONG has launched with carpet EDGE coverage in both Karachi & Hyderabad. I myself traveled between the twin cities without any EDGE coverage drop even in the super highway.

I suggest restarting your mobile or check with someones else mobile phone.

Adding my two cents here regarding EDGE performance, you can easily watch youtube streaming videos smoothly with any compatible mobile phone.

Pakistan market is no more number of customer game especially when it comes to cost of acquiring a customer is concerned. 500 Rupees per SIM is a recognizable cost. 30 Million Rupees a day plus the 09 Million in terms of balance in SIMs. Marketing needs to be differentiated from SALE.

I feel TELENOR has taken good steps by linking sale performances with the revenue oriented sale target to generate quality sale. Real marketing skills cant be reflected in no. of connections-need to weight them as well.

How they ensure that user will re-load beyond Rs 150 Balance. Mobile operators are going towards "Data" and "VAS". Voice has little margins.

Have you seen the real uptake of "Post Paid" sale of CMPak? Any new initiative that other forget. For example, Some real package for the neglected niche market--something complementing the corporate social responsibility.

WTIS day is coming on May 17, 2008 and the theme is quite clear to give us WAKE UP call. Theme is "connecting people with disabilities-TELECOM FOR ALL".

Let see what CMPak can do in real marketing terms, instead of relying on heavy financial muscles of China Mobile

Rehan,

Almost everyone has this service... for prepaid users

But they are with different names

Mobilink = EasyShare
Telenor = Easyload
Ufone = Ushare

I am not sure about zong's name... but yes they offer this service too

And yes, for ufone, you can share balance from Prepaid to Postpaid too... reversal is not possible. I don't know about other companies

Hi,

Mobilink is offering balance sharing between users its really easy

*100*Recipient’s mobile number with 92 prefix *Transfer Amount# and press ‘Send’ on your mobile screen and have fun sharing with this exciting new service. For example to transfer Rs. 200 to 0300-8361166 type:   *100*923008361166*200# (Please note that the mobile number has to be without the 0 in the prefix)

I don't know about Telenor, but as soon as I get any info I'll update all you.

Well, Mobilink, Ufone, Telenor are currently offering balance sharing facility. Telenor introduced service when they first came in to Pakistan market , followed by Ufone and lastly by Mobilink

As far as Zong is concerned , Zong does not have even have their Topup Cards available in the market like the other operators. This shows the interest of users. They have heavily marketed their company however the Operations team seems to be not delivering the results.

They now even have the facility to deliver the Zong sim at your doorstep and you need to just pay them few bucks. The GPRS service is of Zong is good as number of users of GPRS are very low.

Recharge me is a service that if you have a balance of less than 2 rupees (even 0), you can send a message to your friend and can get up to 20 rupees from his/her account (after confirmation from that person).
