Gday All,
I'm new to this forum and have been poking around for a while.
I just recently (3-4 days ago) had my Satellite NBN network installed in my home, out in the sticks with activ8me. I have come to an issue already though, with in the first 30 hrs of it being installed activ8 is saying I have used 20gb of my data. I have gone through what I have used the data for in the first 30hrs and estimated only around 4-4.5gb of data. I have logged into my router and checked to see how much data has transferred through it and it says I've only used 4.5gb since it had been turned on.
I have contacted activ8me, and kept getting told my router is wrong.

My father has had the same trouble with his after owning it for 13 days activ8 is saying he has used 35gb of data and the router stating he has only used 7.5gb, noticing it's roughly about 5 times the amount on both mine and my fathers plans.

I am on the verge of signing for Activ8me satellite (no ISDN available)

Can anyone provide an update on the performance of this ISP?

Have Activ8me had any problems of the like of Go Bush?

For the information of any interested, Telstra have maintained for two weeks that I had ISDN available on the basis of their software check. (Dial-up 24kbs through a limited (string) modem 8kms from exchange) Even with the tech here and the meters hooked up to say "No ISDN", Telstra's tech centre insisted ISDN available and that there must be an open circuit at the exchange and sent the tech back a second time to confirm circuit - 3 hours later "NO ISDN" was the certified verdict. No chance of ADSL - so satellite with Activ8me looks marvellous.

Any advice welcome (Am an Absolute beginner)

Active8 are ok, they are suffering the same speed issues as all ipstar isp's are. The only problem with Activ8 is that u must sign a contract, one big plus that GoBush has goin for it.

Thanks

I use Activ8. Performance is good and they have been reliable and prompt when I need anything. They installed when they said they would. Like you I had an impossible dial up situation and Satellite was the only broadband option.
I have a different view about contracts.... you DO want to sign a contract, because it's the best (only?) way you have to give you some guarantee that you get what the government is paying for.

have you looked at bbnet plans? $25.95 500mb down @256 unlimited up @64 if you go over the limit you can opt for "shaping" that just reduces speed without costing more. 18 month contract.
the problem I am having is getting anyone to offer me a modem that runs on 12 volt DC.

Mum signed up for Activ8me on their 500MB plan recently, she's very pleased with the service after going from 21.6k dialup.

Had some problems with the signup - the accounts people didn't want to accept my credit card for payment initially (as the account would have been in a different name)and then never told us that the application was held up so that cost us a few weeks.

The installer (local electrician) also didn't really know what he was doing, for example he initially couldn't find the Ethernet port on my mum's Mac Mini and then when he did find it to hook it up he said that it wouldn't work with Mac OS X (though when I'm on the phone to check it out I find it's worked straight out of the box without any configuration required).

Apart from those teething issues, very happy.

After reading your post, and the opinion of others, I would suggest your comfort level needs to be reached by the fact that this company has gone to the trouble of being a member of the TIO. Their membership protects your interests. Research can be done on www.tio.com.au . ... hope this helps.

the problem I am having is getting anyone to offer me a modem that runs on 12 volt DC.

Just curious, couldn't you use an inverter on your 12 volt power supply to get the required 240V for your modem ? Or does the modem consume too much power for your 12 volt set-up ?

I think I must be missing something here?? But I have a D-LInk ADSL modem and it runs off a 12 volt plug pack. I run a wireless connection and hook the modem straight into the caravan 12 volt system. I was hoping the satellite system would be 12 volt as well. But if not I will simply have to void the warranty and remove the 240 volt transformer and convert it back to 12 volts, after all modern electronics are always low voltage.

Can anybody tell me about their experiences with telephony over a satellite connection? delay echo etc?? Really love to tell Telstra to ram their fixed line where the monkey stores his nuts!!
Cheers

So - did you sign up with them and if you have, how has the process been?

They have sent me the application forms but I still have a few questions to ask and it has been hard getting hold of the sales rep who is handling my application.......

Does anyone know what their terms are in the eventuality of a relocation? I am on a rental property and there are no guarantees as to how long we will be in this place.

Thanks

Have not signed, but primarily out of concern for the adequacy of satellite broadband generally, if there are any alternatives avail.

Once you have signed up well that it, If you move you can get an installer to reset the dish for you or if you have the soft ware you can do it your self... I take my whole system away when we travel for months on end ....It is no different to setting up free to air sat tv...

Been with them three days and quite happy. It was out for a few hours this morning but you ring them up and they are on your case. You don't get left feeling stranded. Suppose they are all the same but when you ring, from your phone number they seem to automatically scan your modem status. The problem this morning was there Victorian transmitter, nothing to do with us as it worked out.

The way it seems to be is the uploads are slow relative to the down loads. Presumably the modem runs on a 12 volt power pack and that would probably explain things but still in front of dialup. As it works out we were with iprimus before and using their ispeed software. This only downlads pictures in rough form and you move to full quality if you really want to see the picture properly.

With primus this was for speed (had unlimited downloads) but, as the software is still on our machines, we use it with activ8. Only now its purpose is more for reducing the consumption of the service plan.

Had no trouble setting up a router and having two machines on line at once which is a step forward for us.

Not shonky is what I would say about activ8.

I have sent in my paperwork and hopefully it will be installed within the next couple of months as the rep said there has been a rush of applications flooding in so they need to get more equipment sent in from Japan (or some distant place............) and I have spoken to other folks on the island who have had the service installed recently - they are happy with the service and the support.

Just for general info - if you move during the term of the contract, you just pay 50% of the balance or transfer the balance of your contract to the new occupants.

At this stage if you move and the new premises do not have a service installed and is eligible under the guidelines of the grant - you can reapply with the new address.

Hope this helps someone looking for info.

cheers

Are you talking about satellite plans from bluemaxx ????

I just had a look at their website and their plans are more expensive than the active8me ones????

Sorry - I am confused.

Dont worry about what is currently on the web page contact Russell at bluemaxx for the updated prices for the plans...They only got them a week back, Ipstar set the plan prices as I am told.. so it would in that case be the same for all of the ISP"s

Personally never heard of a wholesaler forcing a standard price for all ISPs. and if that was the case I cant see any advantage of one over the other. Both use the same wholesale system and would have the same plans. Picking the one with the best end user support would be the only difference.

P.S a week is plenty of time to update a table of plans. Maybe thats the difference?

Ukurrie... you mentioned that you use G711a codec for your voip...
(1) Could you please let me know what IPSTAR plan (speed - Upload & Download) you are on when you use the G711a codec???
And
(2) what service provider are you using when you make these calls with G711a codec ???
Your honest reply will be appreciated. Thanx

Have been signed up now for about 3 months.Out at Globe derby and couldnt get ADSL.
I signed up for the 3 year plan as I didn't want to pay the installation costs.
If you are thinking about it you might wantto hurry as the 7.30 report on friday had an article about the government slashing the $3000.00 grant under the broadband connect scheme down to a third.
Whilst it hasn't been as as fast as ADSL overall (it wasn't expected) I have been happy with it as its been a breath of fresh air compared to dial up.
The best download speed I had at night was 400 odd using Toast.net (shuttle speed test) but its usually around the 260-300.
My only and major concern is that I I am strugling big time trying to run VPN into work,I realise latency is most probably the cause however their help desk in this area has been found to be wanting as I have been told different solutions only to be told to change to another VPN client (ie Cisco).however the person that day more or lees wished me luck as it was the first itme he had come across this problem.
However for all other down loads I'm quite happy.
