Fieldtrip Friday -- Eco-History at Matheson Hammocks

Date: September 25, 2009
Time: 10 AM-12 NOON

Visit a rare example of a “tropical hardwood hammock,” as well as other
terrestrial and marine habitats on this outing.

Students will:
• examine the ways humans have survived in this region for more than
10,000 years
• gain a better understanding of the ecosystem and of environmental
conservation efforts

• If you would like to go, detach the bottom and follow instructions.
Keep the top for your records.
• Please arrive 15 minutes early, as we will start right on time.
• Park your car right after you get off Old Cutler Road. You will see a
concrete shelter. We meet at that shelter.

Miami Science Museum Friday, October 16 at 9:45 AM

Join us for a day of exploration at the Miami Science Museum. We will see the new exhibit Charlie and Kiwi’s Evolutionary Adventure and join Charlie as he travels back in time to the age of the dinosaurs to discover the kiwis’ ancestors and evidence for how evolution works.

We will also “Meet the Critters” at the adjacent Falcon Batchelor Bird of Prey Rehab Center.

Our Courts is the vision of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who is concerned that students are not getting the information and tools they need for civic participation, and that civics teachers need better materials and support.

Articles of Interest

This week's New Yorker carried a wonderful story by Dave Eggers. It is an elaborate retelling of Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are. In Egger's story, you find out what little Max is really going through, why he is so angry. The story is called "Max at Sea." You can find it here:
