Hi, everyone,

We’ve begun our academic year at home and we’re well into the biology textbook.  This year we’re going to create a study folder with a section for each chapter.

I originally thought of having my son take notes on each chapter and place his notes in his science notebook, but the author of the textbook came up with something that works even better for us.  For each chapter, there are colorful note prompts to fill in that capture the important facts.  After filling in all the notes and the mini-flip pages (and fold-outs and what-have-you) for each chapter, you cut them out and paste them in a folder section.  I think this is going to make learning the facts much easier.

There are no photos on the author’s website, which made it a small challenge to figure out how the whole contraption is put together.  At the end of the week, when we set up the first panel, I’ll send out a photo.

See the biology study folder here: http://gravitaspublications.com/_product_36077/Study_Folder_for_Level_I_Biology

We’re using several web pages to delve into taxonomy.  Here are links:

Encyclopedia: The Animal Kingdom

Classifying Animals

Next week, we will work on the lab book.  There are several good exercises on classification.  We’ll use the folder panel we create this week to keep drilling the facts.  We’ll also spend a day or two on chapter 1 of Biology Connects to Language to get our Latin and Greek roots straight.  Those that are studying Latin this year may benefit from doing this workbook concurrently with the biology curriculum.

If you come up with a wonderful way to supplement this chapter, please let us know.

Best wishes,

Toni Deveson

I have purchased the biology study folder. I love it. It will allow
us to generate terrific entries for our notebook, thus memorializing
what we have learned.

Best,

Claudia
