RecentlyGoogle upgraded their Chat / Hangouts feature to Meet (interestingly around the same time that the Brave icon disappeared from the system tray. Hangouts used a browser extension and this add-on used to run in the background. The new Meet is embedded in Gmail and no longer requires a separate add-on.

I fired my laptop up a couple of days ago and I noticed that the dropbox icon in the taskbar was missing. I checked task manager and dropbox is running theres just no icon and if I kill the task and double click on the dropbox exe it loads the app but does not show the Icon so I am unable to check my settings or anything else. Oddly enough it is still working fine on my main desktop.

Also, when I launch the installer, after it has downloaded the dropbox files via the installer it doesn't actually launch the install process to let me input my user account or link my files but if I check task manager it shows that dropbox.exe is running.

In my case the dropbox icon was set to "on" and I toggled it off. After exiting the dialog, I had my dropbox icon back in the "show hidden icons" area. I repeated the above and toggled the dropbox icon back to "on" and now it is back in my systray where it belongs.

Solution: as of Sep 15 2018, right click on taskbar in windows, select "Taskbar settings," and scroll down to section "Notification Area," and select "Select which Icons Appear on the Taskbar." here you should see DROPBOX and can turn it on!

I'm having the same problem as above. I have been using dropbox for years untill this evening it pops up an error message about "permission", I have tried to follow the step in dropbox help page but not working, then I uninstalled and reinstalled dropbox for several times, during the installation process, it shows "installing..." for about 1 or 2 miuntes then it went off and the dropbox icon was not shown on the taskbar. Although i click on the icon shown on startup program, it seems not functioning at all! no starting, connecting or syncing as last time.

So unexpectedly my volume control is missing from the system tray on Windows 7. I goto the start menu and type volume and choose "Show or hide volume (speaker) icon on the taskbar" and it's disabled in there and set to off. I then click "customize notification icons" at the bottom and on the list that shows up, I see at the bottom "Volume" with the dropbox icon over it.

forgot to mention: All the volume functions work, it's just the icon that's missing. I can control the volume by the keyboard or through the actual volume control (by pulling up the control panel widget). I just don't have the icon on the systemtray. All the rest of the system works tho.

I'm running Windows 7.I could not quickly find 'Notification Area' in Control Panel, so I simply typed in "notification area" after clicking on the start button (lower left)Pick the first response,'Notification Area Icons'.

Choose 'turn system icons on or off'. You should be able to pick which ones to show. If the volume control is greyed out choose 'Restore default icon behaviours'.

Sorry to say, the patch I used is not compatible with Windows 7, but for your information, I have/had exactly the same problem with Windows XP. The problem has obviously carried over into Windows 7.

this is caused by a timing defect in the Windows function Shell_NotifyIcon in shell32.dll, which has a timeout fixed at 4 seconds. Combined with an unfavorable Windows API message this causes the problem, which befalls many heavily loaded computers that don't have ultra-fast hard disks. Changing the timeout to one minute and removing the unwanted message solves the problem

In addition to all the other solutions mentioned here, you can use Windows Group Policy editor to fix it if nothing else works. The following works for not just volume icon, but for missing network icon, missing clock and missing power indicator from notification area as well.

I found a bug in Windows 11 when I opened a chrome profile, it shows up two profile icons instead of just one (see the screenshot). In Windows 10, it used to open with the bottom-right icon, but I think Windows 11 added a new place for the icon in the upper-right, but overlapping it with the old icon place instead of replacing it.

This worked for me. But I have two separate Chrome accounts for work and personal, and I realized when opening my personal account that my Google account icon/badge no longer shows. So my question is: if badges were turned off, what is the remaining icon on my Chrome taskbar and why is it still on, but my personal one isn't?

Hello we are manually distributing a desktop shortcut file across our network to every workstation. When we created the shortcut we applied a custom icon of our company logo (.ico file) to it. The problem is that when we copy the shortcuts to workstations, their not keeping the custom icon on it and rather just showing the default icon-less shortcut picture.

The closest thing I can think of is to create a batch file pointing to the Exe,then creating an exe using a bat-to-exe converter and embedding the original icon in this new executeable and making a shortcut to it,upon execution the shortcuts should pull the Exe icon

From there you can select New shortcut, specify the Name, Location the shortcut has to go (desktop in your case) target location of the file you want to create the shortcut to and finally the Icon file path so you can specify the icon.

I have been banging my head against the wall with the same problem. I pushed out the shortcut via a GPO, shortcut is created fine, but the icon is still the blank document icon and not the custom one. I have put the .ico on the network share that everyone has access to, updated the GPO with the new location- no dice. I even have the .ico shared to all authenticated users- no dice.

Check the security settings under the Delegation and Scope tabs. I had to tell Domain Users and Domain Computers to have Read & Write access in order for the custom icon to show properly. I have also pointed them to a network share for the icon.

I'm working on an applcation in Python's PyQt4 and cannot find how to change the taskbar icon. I made my .ui files in Qt's Designer, where I can change the windowIcon properties. But that is not what I am looking for. I want to change the look of the application's icon in windows taskbar. For now it is Python logo in a window icon.

Windows 11, TeamViewer v15.53.6. I recently updated TeamViewer on my laptop, and since then the TeamViewer icon in the system tray (now called the "Notification Center") on Windows is missing. It'll reappear if I manually kill the TeamViewer application/process and restart it, but then it's gone the next time I restart my computer.

I have not yet completely wiped out TeamViewer and reinstalled it, but I was wondering if anyone in the community (or support if you're listening!) has run across this and has a fix, or ideas I can try.

In any case, thanks for pointing out the Taskbar settings. Did Microsoft introduce the new shift away from the "System Tray" in Windows 8 or was it 8.1? Either way, I keep forgetting about the controls to hide or surface icons there. I'll remember this for when the icon is just gone and see if I can't make it come back by toggling this control.

Well, I may have to change the accepted answer to Fabrizio's. I just booted up my laptop at home, and the icon is missing in the system tray. I went into Taskbar Settings and toggled the setting to hide/display the TeamViewer icon, and it made no difference! I'm going to try restarting the explorer.exe process, but thanks to Fabrizio's comment, I'm thinking this is a bug in the latest update.

I think I've narrowed it down a pinch. When my laptop goes to sleep, the icon is lost. Or rather, when it wakes up from sleep, the icon is gone. Starting the laptop up from shutdown (and I'm using Fast Startup, so we all know that means my laptop doesn't really shutdown as in the past), the icon will be there. If I let my laptop fall asleep, however, the icon will be missing when it wakes up.
