For the Emerge Text preset to work you need to give the text a stroke and no fill.
You can make your own text presets. Just set up your keyframes, select the text layer and choose ANIMATION > SAVE ANIMATION PRESET. I keep an alias of my personal preset library inside the Presets folder located in the AE application folder. That way I can easily back up the original folder easily.

has anyone gotten this damn emerge thing to work? i have it working if I use an opacity fill, but it in the preset it looks like each letter emerges unevenly, which I want. this just makes each letter appear

To get Emerge working, after applying the preset, go to your Text properties, then go to your Animator properties, ADD a Stroke Opacity of 100% and a Stroke Color of your choice. Once that is completed that should allow emerge to work like it should.

If you just want to recreate the same effect select the text layer, press the U key twice to reveal all modified properties, select the Effects and Transform properties of the layer and save an animation preset.

Thanks Roland. Iappreciate the offer, but to be honest I posted the question because this is something that happens to me quite regularly. I just thought it was strange that when you drag a preset to an object, that the name of that preset is not recorded somehow to be identifiable in the future.

A fair number of presets involve more than one effect or Text Animator Group. Things will also get messy if multiple Presets are applied. I don't think there's an elegant way to handle this which will suit the whims and fancy of every user. At times like this, I believe it's best to leave it to the user to take the initiative, to input their own comment, whichever way they find to be the most appropriate.

Without seeing the preset in action this is utterly pointless. Different presets can still use identical features and just looking at some keyframes and properties doesn't tell us anything. Even the mere notion that anyone would know the presets by heart and could identify them just by looking at there parameters rendered output is actually pretty unrealistic. Even if you post your animation we'll all likely have to look it up and compare.

I'm working on a info animation and I'm adding and playing with animation presets; I found one I like but I have 4 or 5 lines, short paragraphs, I'm going to add the effect "Stretch and Slide". The only thing Im not seeing how to do is reverse the effect so that pagraph 1 comes in from the left and pragraph 2 comes in from the right, so on and so on.

Right now the paragraphs with the effect on them are both coming in from the left and I would like to be able to reverse it for a couple paraphs. Could someone please enlighten me on how to acheieve the effect I've described ? Thanks in advance!

The preset you're looking at is not a dedicated text preset - it's a general effects preset. Yes - it will work with any layer, including text, but it's not really designed for text. I've had a quick look at it, with a view to your request to change direction. Frankly it would be much easier for you if you just keyframed it directly. All that's basically happening is ax X scale change and an X position change. 4 keyframes in total. See if you can create it yourself.

As Steve already mentioned "Stretch and Slide" is not a text animation presets. There is no existing text animation preset that matches the look of this Transition and Movement preset. After reading this post you should be able to create your own text animation preset the does the very same thing by applying the same math and logic to the available text properties under the Animate menu at the top of a Text layer.

When you are trying to figure out exactly what is going on in a layer just select the layer and press the U key twice. I could see all of the expressions and the complete layout very quickly. I started at the bottom and disabled the expressions then I started with just the Anchor Point expression. It only took one scrub through the timeline to see what was happening by just looking at the value. A quick glance at the expression revealed the source of the movement. That is all that it took.

A simple linear interpolation method was used to convert the Stretch Master Control slider to values that would move the Transition>Anchor Point from comp width to comp center. The linear method is written like this:

"t" is the value of the property you are reading. In this project that is the Stretch Master Control Slider that is added to the layer as the first effect. "tMin" and "tMax" are the minimum and maximum values you expect from t. "value1" and "value2" are the new values you want to deliver to the property. This is the original Transform>Anchor Point expression:

If you check the value for the anchor point you'll see that the X value, the first part of the array, places the anchor point at the right edge of the comp and moves it to the center. That makes sense when you check the Anchor Point values. This expression also locks the Y position to the center of the layer.

The layer now comes in from the Right instead of the left. All that is left to do is enable the other expressions. I hope this helps you figure out how to analyze what is going on with a layer and then change the properties you need to so that you get the results you want.

Create a text layer with the formatting and style that you want. Select the Layer and then go to Animation > Reveal all modified properties. Select the Source Text value in the timeline and then go to Animation > Save Animation Preset to say all of the character and paragraph attributes as a preset. This can then be double-clicked in the Effects and Presets panel whenever you need a new text layer. The only thing here is that I already have like 10 text layers with text, and for what I've tried, the animation preset also changes the text. I understand that this is though to be usen when creating from scratch nex lines, but what if you already have the text in the layer?

This is ridiculous! AE still does not have text presets (or layer style presets fot that matter)...
Applying an animation preset changes the text too... So instead of saving time, it adds more time to spend fixing it.
All other adobe apps have this but not the one for motion design.

Ok, but why should one need to be an expressions guru to apply basic text styles? Just a simple panel like Ps, Ai have would be far more user & productivity friendly. Plus one still need to in advance to know exact settings and names, whereas the ideal would be once visually happy with the font style to just click save preset. Then apply to all text layers concerened.

Typeflow is an After Effects text preset that makes it super simple to create quick easing and overshoot text animations, without the hassle of rigging up expressions and text animators or messing with keyframes. Typeflow is fully customizable and responsive, allowing you to quickly create smooth modern text animations so you can get back to animating that epic title design or product shot.

Here at Highlands Creative we want to start giving away some of the things we use and create to better help you! This is the first in hopefully many more posts where we give you all something you can use.

For this first freebie I thought we would give away something that will make animating text in AE a little quicker and easier. I've created three text presets that I use on a regular basis and masked them within some animated paths.

These are pretty smooth and have a lot of uses from your announcement slides to Lower Thirds. In the download you'll find an AE project with all of the files within them as well as a folder containing the presets to drop in your AE presets folder. If you don't know how to install presets, then follow this link. Once you've got them installed you can open up AE and drop them on any text file and you should see the smooth text animation you see above. It is super easy and even the most beginner of AE users can do this. Also another preset is in there, a trim paths preset. You see it used above to animate the lines drawing in and out. I use this all the time for all sorts of stuff. It starts in the middle and animates out to the edge of the path. Again, something that will hopefully speed you up and make AE easier for you.

With your new text selected, navigate to Animation > Browse Presets. After Effects will launch Adobe Bridge, allowing you to preview the text presets before you apply them to the text layer.

When you apply a text preset in After Effects it will apply the first keyframe at the location of your playhead. You may need to adjust the keyframes or smooth them out by converting them to bezier keyframes or even manipulating them in the graph editor.

You can also jump into further customizable options by selecting the advanced menu in the Range Selector. In the advanced menu, you can change which characters are affected, adjust smoothness, and more. The best thing to do is simply mess around with different settings until your text presets are just right.

Open a Premiere Pro Project, and then select File > Dynamic Link > Create New After Effects Composition. Save the Project, and a new After Effects composition is created for you. From the Layer Menu in Adobe After Effects, select New >Text, which creates text centered in the composition.
