Atech at Sony Style suggested a USB keyboard and it may come to that. Is it possible that I might find a new clip assembly from an old mother board. You say that the mother board has to be removed if that clip is broken. Is it actually possible to fix this puppy without buying a whole new mother board. Obviously, I would be better putting that money toward a new computer.

Very happy to have found this great website. I have a VGN-SZ340P and the speed of the hard drive is killing me. I have bought a new Intel X-25M SDD and now with these instructions, I can easily replace it. My question however might be silly to you. I want to know how can I transfer the windows and sony softwares to the new SDD? Can I replace it first and then use the recovery DVD I made earlier by sony recovery program? Or I need to use the Norton Ghost? I already know about the transfer kits lijke Apricot, but not an option for me!

Hi, I have a PCG-6Q1L, which I believe is the equivalent of the SZ-430N. The laptop was running extremely hot and shutting down. I found that the heatsink had been previously removed and the thermal paste had not been replaced. After replacing the thermal paste, it no longer overheats to the point of shutting down. However it is still gets quite hot.

Do you have any fan grill on the bottom or side of the laptop?

Buy a can of compressed air and blow air inside the fan grill. This will remove most dust from the fan/heatsink assembly. Try this first.

just took apart my laptop completely. fan was so dirty and the casing was dirty too. all cleaned and fine. now trying to re-essemble everything.. what a pain but like everyone says. slowly but shurely.

Great, Fantastic repair guides. Have VGN-SZ491N the WANN hardware switch is not functioning. In your guide, after pulling out switch panel, can the switch be replaced or repair? Is there a configuration methds to work around. Much Thanks. Tim D

As a hint you can add a second screen through the VGA port via cable. All you need to do is press FN Key and F7 to select dual screen mode. Make sure you do this before a disk is entered in the disk drive as it will not work if you try to change the mode after the notebook detects a disk in the disk drive.

I want to replace my cpu in mine. What i wanted to ask is do i need a specific one or can i use any processor for it. And also can i replace it or not? Thanks i need an answer asap. Will be really grateful

To remove the keyboard on my VGN-SZ330P, prior to your step2, you have to undo a recessed screw underneath the notebook. This is located immediately to the left of the docking socket looking from underneath. Also the left hand latch (step4) is under the F1 key.

Can you lift up the hard drive as it shown on the step 16?

Disconnect the orange cable from the hard drive.

Grab the hard drive cable connector and carefully pull the hard drive to the left.

Did you replace the fan and heatsink or just the fan? I think I am having the same issues you are and need to do the same thing, but I was wondering if I should just order the fan or fan and heatsink.

Thanks for the step-by-step pictures. Very clear instructions. Found your site after I took apart and reassembled my SZ491N to clean the fan. I removed the keyboard and palm rest (did not remove the cables) and tried to get to expose more of the fan, but gave up. I the process of finding a way to expose the fan, I must have disconnected something (although all connections look intact) because the display does not work. Computer otherwise seems to work (Windows sound plays when it starts). Any thoughts as to what i may have disconnected?

I used these instructions to change the HDD on my laptop. It is the first time I have ever disassembled a laptop, but am pleased to say, thanks to your instructions, it worked!

When it overheats because the fan has stopped, the screen goes off. then a smell of burning emerges. I take it that the motherboard has had its days. Is there a lot to change the motherboard and where do one get a motherboard for the SZ3VWP from? Are they different to the SZ3XWP?

Thanks for posting this. I have an SZ120P/B exactly like the one pictured in your instructions. It cost $2200 back in 2006. The clock kept losing time, then I realized the CMOS battery was dead. Thanks to you, I now know where it is and how to replace it. I also disabled bluetooth since its a battery drain and I never use it anyway. Thanks again and God bless you!

Thanks for sharing useful information and clear steps. My laptop was making a noise and I thought I needed to change the hard drive, well, I took it apart and clean it. Now is running like a new one. THANK YOU!

Thank your verry much for this outstanding instruction. I was afraid to change the HD-Drive on my Vaio SZ1 VP C because of the roomers how dificult this would be. After finding your side I coult see the steps and so I looked forward so much to do it.

And it worked verry good. The Vaio is running as well as it was before with its new HDD. Again thanks for your help!

Thanks for excellent guide. My SZ1 laptop will not run on mains power and althought the computer says it is charging the battery level is falling, it is not charging. Even when shutdown the battery LED blinks to show a discharge. Without the battery connected even on mains power it will not start. The mains charger is putting out 19V and the DC jack seems secure.

So the battery is now fully discharged. Any suggestions? My thought was if I could locate a circuit diagram for the 6 slots which connect the laptop to the battery then I could rig a power source direct to replace the now flat battery. Or perhaps make myself a battery charger to recharge the battery.

MY LCD display of duo 11 (SVD11213CNB) is damaged. But sony service center informed that lcd screen is out of stock and will not be available. Do you have any idea if any other screen of some other model could be used instead?

Any Chance to get the display flatcable which goes from Mainboard to display?

my Vaio screen is damaged and now I am using it as CPU (by attaching it with my LED TV with HDMI ) and attaching external mouse and keyboard with it. I love my machine and want it to be more useful and portable @ min cost.
