A dolphin is an aquatic mammal in the clade Odontoceti. Dolphins belong to the families Delphinidae, Platanistidae, Iniidae, Pontoporiidae, and possibly extinct Lipotidae. There are 40 extant species named as dolphins.

Marine-life experts believe the harmful algal bloom is to blame, though they are waiting on test results to confirm it. The algae, Pseudo-Nietzsche, produces a neurotoxin called domoic acid, which can be poisonous to seabirds and fish once ingested. It can then travel across the food chain to larger marine animals like dolphins, sea lions and even humans, according to CNN.

Humans too can get sick from domoic acid if they eat contaminated food, although seafood is tested for this toxin to prevent it from reaching dinner tables. The California Department Of Health specifically warned against eating "sport-harvested mussels, clams or scallops from Santa Barbara County" after high levels of the toxin were detected there.

Co-founder and managing director of Channel Islands Marine and Wildlife Institute Ruth Dover said they have responded to more than 100 dead sea lions and 300 live sea lions exhibiting signs of ingesting domoic acid in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

The death toll for dolphins is now up to 100, the group said, which Greenman describes as unusual, particularly in how this bloom appears to be affecting species that typically dwell far from the shore, as per CNN. (ANI)

Carcasses of 120 river dolphins have been discovered floating in a tributary of the Amazon River over the past week. Experts believe that severe drought and heat may be the culprits behind this mass mortality.

The Amazon River, currently experiencing low water levels due to an intense drought, has seen its waters heated to temperatures intolerable for the dolphins. This has led to a significant depletion of oxygen in the water, resulting in the death of thousands of fish.

The Amazon river dolphins, many of them strikingly pink, are a unique freshwater species found only in South American rivers. They are among the few remaining freshwater dolphin species in the world. Their slow reproductive cycles make their populations particularly vulnerable to threats.

Biologists and other experts have been tirelessly working to recover the dead mammals from a lake and conduct autopsies on the carcasses to ascertain the cause of death. While drought and heat are suspected, scientists are also considering other potential causes, such as bacterial infections. Environmental activists have pointed fingers at climate change, which increases the likelihood and severity of droughts and heatwaves. However, the role of global warming in the current Amazon drought remains unclear, with factors like El Nino also potentially at play.

Species

In Maryland, the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is the most commonly encountered marine mammal, with sightings throughout the state as far north as Pooles Island in Harford County.

Could there really be 1,000 (or more!) dolphins in the Chesapeake Bay in the summer? Researcher Helen Bailey believes so. Based out of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, Dr. Bailey and her team are studying how often dolphins come into bay, how long they spend there, which areas they are using and why. With funding support from the Chesapeake Bay Trust, Dr. Bailey founded DolphinWatch, a web-based research project that allows people to share dolphin sightings using their smartphones.

All marine mammals (dolphins, porpoises, manatees, seals and whales) are federally protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which prohibits the feeding, harassment or interaction with live animals, as well as the collection and interaction of dead, stranded animals. Additionally, manatees, sea turtles and whales are listed under the Endangered Species Act, with violations resulting in confiscation, fines and imprisonment.

They feed mainly on demersal species like small fish, cephalopods and crustaceans. Finless Porpoises are found in the same habitat as humpback dolphins but rarely at the same time.

This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to work as a veterinary intern at Dolphins Plus, Inc., located in Key Largo, Florida. While last summer I worked with penguins (you can read about my experience here), this time I lived my life-long dream of working with dolphins. (I tried a new format for this post, so we will see how it goes!)

I think one of the main takeaways I have from this internship is an understanding of how connected the different aspects of this field are to one another. Veterinarians rely upon trainers to build relationships with their animals in order to get samples. Trainers rely upon the veterinarians to keep the animals healthy. Researchers rely upon both teams to bring new insight to the scientific community. Coming into this internship, I was uncertain as to whether I wanted to pursue a research career in marine science or attend veterinary school. Now that I have spent three months in the vet lab at a dolphin facility, in addition to a few weeks with the research department, I realize there are ways to do both. I have learned that having some form of additional education is critical in having a successful career as a marine mammal veterinarian. Therefore, my plan after graduation has become clearer. I hope to graduate school with a degree in marine science, acquire additional animal experience, and then attend veterinary school.

My favorite moment was the first day I was cleared to go in the water and swim with the dolphins. Being able to look them right in the eye, rub their backs, and interact with them was such an incredible experience. They are magnificent creatures with so much to teach the world, and I love every second I get to connect with them. However, putting the occasional kisses from dolphins and sea lions aside, if I were to just look at veterinary experiences, I think my favorite moment would have to be running the ultrasound machine while we were administering a catheter into one of our dolphins as part of a CT procedure. I was right in the thick of the action with all of the trainers and vet staff. It made me realize that this is what I want to do in the future.
