Meeting of the TEI Special Interest Group Computer-mediated Communication (via zoom) (as part of the TEI 25th annual conference and general meeting, no registration for the conference required to participate in the meeting)

19th September 2025, 11:30 - 13:00 CEST

Zoom: https://uni-due.zoom.us/j/7308769925

Objective of the meeting: In July 2024 the TEI Consortium included a new chapter “Computer-mediated communication” into their P5 Guidelines for Electronic Text Encodung and Interchange. As of version 4.8.0 of the guidelines it is therefore possible to rely on the TEI framework as a standard for encoding corpora and other data sets of CMC genres in XML. The TEI CMC chapter is the result of the TEI special interest group (SIG) on computer-mediated communication which, with valuable support by members of of the TEI Council, did the groundwork for the implementation of solutions for the encoding of CMC data into the TEI framework. The status iof the new CMC chapter in the TEI guidelines is that of a basic encoding schema. When encoding and exploiting CMC corpora, scholars would typically wish to annotate even more than just basic structures, e.g. linguistic and semiotic features particular to CMC discourse, and also capture metadata in a way that suits for the specific requirements of research on CMC and social media.

The goal of the meeting is therefore to re-start the TEI-CMC-SIG on basis of the new TEI schema for CMC (and the experiences made with it) and define an agenda for future work and exchange related to the encoding and usage of CMC corpora.

Proposed Agenda:

  1. Welcome and Introduction: past and current status of the SIG

Material: https://tei-c.org/release/doc/tei-p5-doc/en/html/CMC.html

  1. Reports from projects / participants who work with the TEI CMC module or schemas or are planning to do so (contributions welcome)

  2. Exchange platforms and communications of the SIG

currently:

Future:

  • Github?

  • Other?

  1. Further agenda and tasks for the SIG, e.g.

    1. Providing sample data annotated using TEI and the CMC module

    2. Documentation of best practices for encoding CMC genres in TEI

    3. CMC-specific metadata

  2. Organisation of the SIG and next steps

If you would like to take part, about which we would be delighted, it would be helpful if you could send us a note until 12th September. Please also let us know if you have additional agenda items.

With best regards
