TheDepartment of Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is committed to producing the finest surgeons, using a dynamic didactic curriculum and a teaching philosophy rooted in mentorship. Our residents work as a team, employing the latest technology in surgical simulation and using web-based clinical modules that complement our robust skills laboratory.
Our residents are exposed to everything from general surgery to colon and rectal surgery, pediatric surgery, and plastic surgery, and from surgical intensive care medicine and surgical oncology to vascular surgery. Having contact and experience with such a wide variety of procedures enriches the educational experience and broadens the knowledge base of the surgeons we train.
Surgical interventions can protect human life, prevent disability, and improve the quality of day-to-day experiences. At Mount Sinai, we strive to provide the highest possible level of surgical care and to prepare our residents, fellows, and medical students to continue this legacy. We teach by case discussions and one-on-one mentoring. We also focus on research and regularly share our findings in peer-reviewed journals and at national symposia presentations.
We teach our students to provide compassionate and exceptional care that centers around our patients. To best meet patient needs, we are expanding our programs and facilities. We are growing our Melanoma Program and our Global Health Program. We are adding more minimally invasive operating rooms and state-of-the-art office suites. In addition, we are developing our Advisory Board and Friends of Surgery Group in order to build connections with our donors and contributors, which will help us serve our patients even better.
The Department of Surgery Research Program recently centralized efforts across all Mount Sinai Health System sites, resulting in more effective and efficient access to research resources and opportunities. The number of industry-sponsored trials, investigator-initiated grant applications, and associated funding opportunities has significantly increased as a result and continues to grow as our department expands. Our team remains committed to fostering opportunities for increased research initiatives.
Expert staff consists of leaders in the field of their specialization who follow the most up-to-date trends and attend continuous training and professional development, in order to offer their patients only the most effective and most advanced methods of treatment.

This is a handsome book describing and picturing the techniques of general surgical procedures. Complete presentation is accomplished by a narrative description on one page faced by a page of drawings illustrating the narrative material. With careful spacing of commendably brief narrative paragraphs, and clear identification of figure and narrative, a large body of material is easily read, easily and quickly visualized, and easily assimilated. Each procedure analysis is preceded by a succinct section entitled "Important Considerations" in which cardinal technical and anatomical features and hazards are outlined. By cutting his writing to the very bone, and by confining himself rigidly to his theme, Dr. Wilder has produced a text that is hard hitting and good teaching.
One might wish for a bit more of the author, a bit more surgical "lore" in the narrative section. The surgeon "arrives" as an artist through actual experience in the operating room. The embryo surgeon, who will benefit most from this book, would gain more if some of the dynamic aspects of various situations were pointed out by the experienced author. A word as to tissue toughness or delicacy, the feel of an infiltrating tumor, the ease of dissection in certain retroperitoneal planes, tricks of mobilization and exposure, etc., would smooth the path.
Illustrations are the backbone of any atlas, and this volume profusely and completely portrays the procedures described. The majority of drawings are of the simple pen-and-ink-line variety and are effective, with important features clearly depicted and confusing unimportant detail eliminated. The remaining figures are half-tone drawings and are not nearly so good, being oversimplified, stiff, unreal, unclear. The illustrations in some instances lack three dimensional feeling; and as in the written text, there are too few dynamic pictures showing the action, position, or relation of hand or instrument to surrounding tissues and plane - "touch" pictures that are so valuable in bridging the gap between the flat page and the living organism.
This will be a popular volume and rightly so. Dr. Wilder has provided the student and young technician with an accurate map of the complicated, often confusing, always dangerous course of the surgeon in the operating theater.
In 2009, in preparation for the 9th edition, the now-retired Zollinger Jr. asked E. Christopher Ellison, MD, FACS, Robert M. Zollinger Professor of Surgery Emeritus, to become co-author. Ellison has a long and storied career at Ohio State, having served as chair of the Department of Surgery and interim dean of the Ohio State College of Medicine. He was the most obvious choice to take the reins.
When the 10th edition published in 2016, it was apparent to the authors that general surgery had evolved into several subspecialties, so Ellison constructed a panel of Ohio State surgeons to serve as associate editors. With their expertise on procedures and surgical operations, they organized the atlas into chapters based on organ systems and converted some content to a digital version.
With the 10th edition, the authors introduced the Video Atlas of Surgical Operations, which was made available online and edited by David Renton, MD, a surgeon at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center who specializes in minimally invasive and robotic surgery. The video atlas includes the 10 most-performed laparoscopic procedures, formatted to follow the steps outlined and illustrated in the text. This brought the atlas to life.
For the 11th edition, two additional senior authors were added: Timothy Pawlik, MD, The Urban Meyer III and Shelley Meyer Chair for Cancer Research and chair of the Department of Surgery, a noted authority in hepatopancreatic biliary surgery, and Patrick Vaccaro, MD, MBA, former director of the Division of Vascular and Surgery.
Ellison and Zollinger also introduced robotics and innovative techniques used in endovascular surgery. They hired a new principal medical illustrator, Anthony Baker, who leads the Medical Visuals department located in The Ohio State University Health Sciences Library, to create 150 new illustrations to accompany the 14 new chapters.
To adequately illustrate the highly technological equipment in these new chapters, Baker departed from the traditional pen-and-ink approach of previous editions, employing a modern digital illustration technique. To complete the illustrations, he would observe live surgeries, take photos, record videos, write out a description of the illustration, draw a sketch and meet with atlas authors to review before revising, creating final line art and adding color.
