In 1984 the government holds an iron grip over their populations,
watching and hearing everything. Winston Smith's job was to destroy
evidence of the past or change it make it seem like the Party knew it
would end up how it is now. He tries to silently rebel without getting
denounced by the Thought Police. As he goes on with his actions he
finds himself getting deeper and deeper into trouble and gets involved
with an undeerground rebel association known as the Brotherhood. This
is a great book for it contains many details on how different it might
have been. There is a lot of deep thought put into this book that
opens your eyes to the bigger picture. login (C129)

When I read this book this summer, it always gave me a sense of being
in a dark grey world. It's scary to think about it. Gives me chills
right here by the computer.

I also suggest reading Farenheit 451. It is similar in how it
"predicts" the future of society, but more of a local level (Orwell
dealt with the entire world, while Bradbury jsut dealt with American
society and censorship).

I especially liked this book when it had censoring and random details
given in the news. It makes me think back of how I watch the news. You
can't really tell if that number is good or not if you have nowhere to
base it. For example, the economists just reported we had a large
decrease in sales in shoes, to 1.2 million from 1.5 million. But it
could actually be that on average, 1 million are sold.
