I know this is a little crazy, but I'm curious what people think about it:

TEDxDC
Beyond Politics

This would allow us to really focus on DC people, while leaving the sub-theme options completely open to hit any of the other directions that you're mentioning. We could also have one speaker in each sub-theme that is connected to politics from that particular perspective (art and politics, tech and politics, etc...), since it is the anchor of our community.

I also realize this would be a change from Potomac to DC, but I guess I left the planning meeting on Saturday with the impression that we wanted to focus on showing the world how cool DC has become, and I don't think that anyone outside of the immediate area identifies Potomac with DC. (It also makes a really nice little hashtag: #TEDxDC)

Anyway, just some thoughts -

Yeah, TEDxDC was my first choice, but it's already been licensed to someone else and wasn't available.  (tedxdc.com is registered to a law firm - anyone want to try to get that? :-)

I like "Beyond Politics" as a theme - it certainly speaks directly to our goals of local cross-disciplinary diversity.

Although I do really like that one, I think it needs a third something-ity. Curiosity, Generosity....

I've grouped the speaker/ideas into topic/theme areas, and looks like I've had some help from Clyde Boyer. Thanks Clyde.

I think I may be more or less off grid tomorrow on a field-trip with my daughter's class. Gettysburg, She's number 4, and my last chance I think. I'm out here for 20 years and never been. Wish me luck out in the cold.

I started working on a table to track actual speaker contacts, but I'l have to finish that up later in the week.

Here's the Topic/Theme areas so far:

-Human Body - Health, Brain, Life Extension
-Education
-Food - Nutrition - Hunger - Diet
-"Business"
-Government/Politics
-Green - Sustainability
-Art & Performance
-Public Media/New Media/Social Media/Future of Journalism
-Technology

Thanks, Michelle. The structure on the page is very helpful.

I'll be happy to reach out to William Wilhelm at Bingham McCutchen and see why they're squatting on tedxdc.com, .net, and .org if we want to claim it.

If we think that's a better way to go, I wouldn't mind using TEDxDC.us also. I see a number of other TEDx events have used country specific urls...

Hey Wayne,

Getting the domains is unfortunately a small part of it; apologies if my sarcasm wasn't clear.

TED has already licensed TEDxDC, and it's not available to us at this point.

One of the weaknesses of the TEDx licensing scheme is that they'll license a name for a single event, or no event at all, without any plans to release them upon inactivity.

They've given us a license for TEDxPotomac, and it'd be my vote to run with it at this point.

Shoot - sorry about that, Patrick. Hope I wasn't being pushy. My background is engineering, so sometimes I just have to "solve" problems ;)

Does that mean that the people that reserved TEDxDC are actually here in this DC, and just never got it off the ground? What a shame. I assumed you reached out to them to no avail. C'est la vie.

Onward and upward!

Hi Wayne,

No worries at all.  I'm a "solver" too :-)

I've heard vague mentions that there was a small TEDxDC event, but I haven't seen any confirmation of that or talked to anyone involved.
