Louie Schwartzberg: Hidden wonders of the natural world

07:24 minutes · Filmed Mar 2014 · Posted Apr 2014 · TED2014

We live in a world of unseeable beauty, so subtle and delicate that it is imperceptible to the human eye. To bring this invisible world to light, filmmaker Louie Schwartzberg bends the boundaries of time and space with high-speed cameras, time lapses and microscopes. At TED2014, he shares highlights from his latest 3D film, Mysteries of the Unseen World, which slows down, speeds up and magnifies the astonishing wonders of nature.

Did you change your passwords this week? Go do that, then watch this. The Heartbleed bug reminds us that malicious online viruses spread through simple things you do each day without thinking twice. As James Lyne says, it's not only the NSA that's watching us, but ever-more-sophisticated cybercriminals, who exploit both weak passwords and trusting human nature. Watch »

What drove David Sengeh to create a more comfortable prosthetic limb? He grew up in Sierra Leone, where too many of the people he loves are missing limbs after the brutal civil war there. But he noticed that people who had prosthetics weren’t actually wearing them. So the TED Fellow set out to discover why — and to solve the problem with his team from the MIT Media Lab. Watch »

What do rap shows, barbershop banter and Sunday services have in common? As Christopher Emdin says, they all hold the secret magic to enthrall and teach at the same time — and it’s a skill we often don't teach to educators. The science advocate (and cofounder of Science Genius with the GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan) offers a vision to make the classroom come alive. Watch »

More than 8 million people are crowded together to live in New York City. What makes it possible? In part, it’s the city’s great public spaces — from tiny pocket parks to long waterfront promenades — where people can stroll and play. Amanda Burden helped plan some of the city’s newest public spaces, drawing on her experience as, surprisingly, an animal behaviorist. She shares the unexpected challenges of planning parks people love. Watch »

Quote of the Week

Teachers become great actors and great actresses. … We come to work when we don't feel like it, and we're listening to policy that doesn't make sense — and we teach anyway."

Christopher Emdin: Teach teachers how to create magic
Awesome talk, so accurate. Looking for role models for education outside education is a great idea. Now I am thinking how on earth do I localize it into the Polish environment! Which LOCAL role models can I find for educators and teachers in Poland, with no black churches, local 'variety' of hip-hop and no barbers. Any ideas from your countries?"
