Hello TEDx'ers!
Crazy to believe that this month marks the 5th birthday of our beloved TEDx program! It officially launched in March 2009 and has since become a global phenomenon, with the most recent TEDx events taking place in Canada, Spain and Egypt.
As of today, there have been 9543 events in 158 countries, with 873 upcoming events in 2014 alone. Every day, there are eight TEDx events happening in theaters around the world. (Take a look at this video on TEDx in 2013 that we showed at the Inside TED session at TED2014)
Looking towards 2014 and beyond, here are two big things we are thinking about this year:
1. How do we best share the amazing stories of our global tribe?
In 2014, the TED blog is focusing on the impact stories from TED Talks and all of our communities: speakers, conference attendees, fellows and TEDx.
We must all become storytellers of our unique narrative, and share these stories so that the world at large understands the impact of TEDx events. So, we're asking that you share with us your Impact Stories - all of the great outcomes that happen after your event - so that we can feature these stories on TED.com
Some examples include:
After Liza Long's talk on children's mental illness at TEDxSanAntonio, she lent her support to the regional 1in5 Minds campaign
Tarig Hilal's TEDx Talk inspired the first Kickstarter funded film in Sudan.
Email us at TEDxS...@ted.com to share your Impact Story.
We've scheduled a session on the TEDx Learning Hub at 11am EST on April 2nd to discuss exactly what Impact Stories are, and how you can contribute. Join us!
2. How do we tap into the amazing creativity of the global community to innovate on the platform?
Organizers around the globe have taken initiative to bring innovations back into the TEDx platform, examples like John Werner's (TEDxBeaconStreet) TEDx Adventures, Amy Robinson's (TEDxHuntsville) TEDx Music Project and Phil Klein's (TEDxRainier) Global Organizer's Gathering (which later transformed into the TEDx Learning Hub)
Inspired by these projects, we are launching the TEDx Incubator, where we will select up to three projects a year that benefit the TEDx community locally or globally, and galvanize the power of the TEDx community to support them.
Apply here with your big idea: http://on.ted.com/TEDxIncubator
Applications close on April 16th.
Finally, we want to meet more of you on a regular basis. So we've scheduled a weekly hangout with the TED staff to happen every Wednesday at 11am EST on the TEDx Learning Hub. Our first will be Wednesday April 2nd discussing impact stories, and then begin with an open conversation on Wednesday, April 9th at 11am EST. Join us!
We are so proud of all of the work you have done to bring TED to your communities, and make change on a local level. We can't wait to see what you do this year!
Best,
Salome + the TEDx Team
PS. In honor of our 5th birthday, two TEDx community members - Amy Robinson and Phil Klein took photos of themselves as x's in front of the x sculpture in the TEDx Action Lab at TED2014. We've created a Best of: Human x Facebook album, and we want to include your x photos, too!
Email as...@ted.com with your photo.
