Due to lower attendance at this week's meeting, we decided to discuss hackathon-ideas digitally. I'll start with my list, and anyone who's got an idea can add on from there. We can do a poll to gauge interest in suggested topics sometime next week.
Note that all of the below are working titles. Here goes:
· NeverLookUp – an app for Android which activates a phone's camera and displays the output on half of the screen, leaving the other half available for running other apps — "Haven't you always wanted more time for SMS, Snapchat, and Facebook, but also fewer injuries from running into poles and being hit by cars you didn't notice were there? Now you can have it all with NeverLookUp."
· Chatocracy – a browser-extension which allows both live and threaded discussion based off of the current URL. "Ever wanted to discuss what used to be found at a now-dead link? How about on a video or documentation-page that doesn't natively allow comments, or even a site that has overzealous mods or its own lame registration-system (that doesn't implement OpenID)? Fear not! Chatocracy is here."
· BeenThereSeenThat – a browser-extension that automatically follows redirects, tracks canonical URLs, and hashes images, allowing users to hide or annotate certain content they've come across before. "To Knights of New, typical Redditors, and any individual who generally values their own time – what if something like AdBlock could hide all the boring reposts and stale memes you've already seen a million times, or otherwise alert you (so you don't waste a click)? Well, have we've got a deal for you..."
· CrowdDiff – very generally, a browser-extension that allows users to get paid for spare bandwidth and CPU-cycles, like a slightly-less-noble Folding@Home (where you also get paid for participating). "Nobody's heard of visual regression-testing but the point is it can make you money, and also make the web a better place at the same time."
I'll let somebody else summarize Lenore's idea. Maybe even Lenore herself.
Cheers!
- Patrick
Matt's response, which didn't get reply-all'd:
I like this CrowdDiff concept. Given how useful and interesting Seti@home has been it seems there must be a thousand and one other good uses for those spare cycles.
To add my idea then for the sake of completeness:
Interdisciplinarian - An app or simple program to provide opportunities for people in disparate departments and disciplines to find others whose work they are interested in or is complimentary to foster a closer research community and bridge the divide that prevents good interdisciplinary work. "Still trying to solve that robotics issue with your planter? Confused by the need to find an artist for your geological survey? Not sure who you can go about acidochemistry? It can now all be found in one convenient location. Check profiles and CVs and find that special someone who can help make your research complete!"
